TrueNAS runs on OpenZFS, which checksums every block on write and validates on every read — correcting silently, in real time. HPE's pitch for Alletra Storage MP is "a single, unified architecture" for block, file, and object. What that means in practice: the same physical hardware can run one of three separate software environments — never more than one workload type per node, provisioned and licensed as its own product.
The thing that's actually unified is the control plane: Data Services Cloud Console, HPE's cloud-hosted management layer on GreenLake, sits over all three. It's a real convenience for monitoring — it doesn't make block, file, and object one platform underneath it, and it doesn't change that you're buying three licenses to cover three workloads.

Is HPE Alletra Storage MP really one unified storage platform?
Not in the way most buyers assume. Alletra Storage MP shares hardware and a single cloud console (Data Services Cloud Console on HPE GreenLake) across block, file, and object. But block, file, and object each run as separate software environments, licensed separately, and cannot run at the same time on the same node. If you need all three, you're provisioning and paying for three products.
What's the best alternative to HPE Alletra Storage MP?
