Moving my FreeNAS pool to new hardware?

Hi all,

Is it possible to move my FreeNAS zpool to a new mobo/cpu/memory setup without losing data? I, in the past, created my FreeNAS build as a soft-of experiment and want to make it a little bit more serious and robust. Now that data reliability matters to me a lot more i want to build a system with ECC and some higher-end server parts.

Can you point me to some documentation that discusses this type of change?

Yes, it is possible. Before moving the disks to a new system make sure that you detach (export) the pool (see the description of Detach Volume here: http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Volumes#Viewing_Volumes). You can then auto import the pool in the new system.

Thanks Dusan. I'm going to have to use a completely different USB, right? I can't just plug in the live-usb that i have in my current system?

You can use the current USB. You may need to reconfigure your network interfaces after the HW swap, but if you used a simple DHCP setup it may just work without any modifications.

Warning on that last bit, we've had multiple reports of compatibility issues with those Kingston DIMMs.
