TrueNAS “Fangtooth” was successfully released in April as TrueNAS 25.04.0, which has been adopted by over 50,000 users, breaking previous records for a first release. Fangtooth marks a major step forwards in unifying TrueNAS CORE and SCALE under the Community Edition banner, while bringing improvements to the growing line of TrueNAS Enterprise appliances. Today, we’re announcing the first major update to Fangtooth: TrueNAS 25.04.1.
TrueNAS 25.04.1 delivers over 100 bug fixes and improvements. Key areas of enhancement for the first update include:
Instances: Based on Incus, this experimental feature continues to mature with multiple fixes. Both VMs and LXCs are supported for flexible virtualization options. VMs can now import an existing ZVOL as a disk, and enhancements have been applied to better leverage the ZFS ARC for improved performance. Instances are expected to be Enterprise ready in the next major TrueNAS release ”Goldeye” in October 2025.
Fibre Channel: Fibre Channel support has been expanded in preparation for Enterprise deployments with High Availability (HA). Both the H-Series and F-Series gain Fibre Channel capability with both NVMe and HDD backing pools, making TrueNAS an ideal platform for customers integrating with existing FC SANs.
STIG Support: Secure Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) are used by defense-level organizations to lock down their deployments. This update includes improved password and STIG management for organizations requiring highly secure deployments.
TrueNAS Versioned API: Introduced with 25.04, the all-new, versioned API gains further refinements and documentation, including an online documentation reference for users, partners, and any third-party solution looking to automate their operations and integrate with TrueNAS. The versioned API will greatly simplify system integration and functionality across updates in complex, scalable environments like MSPs.
App Migration Deadline is June 1st
June 1st is an important date for TrueNAS users, with two major changes:
End of Dragonfish Auto Migration: This marks the last day for automatic migration of Apps from “Dragonfish” 24.04 users. The tools to enable migration of legacy Kubernetes to new Docker Apps are stored in the App Catalog, and these tools will be removed when IP addressing for Docker Apps is enabled. After June 1, regular NAS functionality can be updated easily, but Apps will need to be manually recreated. Users should upgrade to TrueNAS 24.10 “Electric Eel” now.
IP Addressing for Apps: After the App catalogs have been changed, each App can be assigned to an interface and its associated IP address. This provides much more power in managing complex storage and App systems. This IP addressing capability will be available on all Fangtooth releases and Electric Eel 24.10.2.2
The recent TrueNAS 24.10.2.2 maintenance patch included a backport of Fangtooth’s App IP addressing capabilities, allowing conservative users to leverage the new App functionality while remaining on Electric Eel.
Fangtooth Unification Gains Momentum
Fangtooth brings together capabilities of both TrueNAS CORE and SCALE, as well as adding new features previously unavailable in either. Fangtooth is maturing and expected to be the dominant version of software used by the community.
Electric Eel laid the groundwork by integrating Docker and ZFS; combined with Fangtooth, over 50% of TrueNAS users are now utilizing Docker, ZFS, and traditional storage protocols – projected to exceed 70% by the end of 2025. The TrueNAS Community benefits from increased efficiency with a more unified software version.
Fangtooth Feature Highlights
In addition to the functionality from both CORE and SCALE, TrueNAS 25.04 introduced a number of new features, including:
- Linux Kernel 6.12 to improve and extends hardware support
- Fast Deduplication to slash your virtualization infrastructure costs
- 5X Acceleration of RAID-Z expansion
- Lightweight LXC containers via Incus “instances”
- Secure Boot and TPM Support for virtual machines
- Configurable App IP addresses available June 1st, 2025
Enterprise Extensions
TrueNAS Enterprise appliances now include extended capabilities with 25.04.1, including:
- Improved Security (GPOS STIG) with additional logging, auditing and password management
- RDMA Extensions for iSCSI (iSER) and NFS, improving latency and IOPS by up to 40%
- iSCSI Block Cloning accelerates VMware clusters and virtualization workloads like VM cloning by 10X
- Fast File Copy accelerates SMB file copy workloads by 10X
- Fibre Channel enables SAN attachment of high-performance NVMe storage on TrueNAS F-Series and H-Series
- NFS Snapshot Directory Access for easier file restoration by end users

When Should I Update?
If you are deploying a new TrueNAS system, we can recommend both Fangtooth 25.04.1 or Electric Eel 24.10.2.2. For current software recommendations, always review the Software Status page for recommendations based on your profile and use case.
For our TrueCommand users looking to centrally administer Fangtooth systems, please ensure that you upgrade any self-hosted TrueCommand instances to TrueCommand 3.1 first before upgrading any connected systems to TrueNAS 25.04. TrueCommand Cloud subscribers will be automatically upgraded with no interaction required.
Current TrueNAS 13.x users looking for the new capabilities outlined above can migrate to TrueNAS 25.04, preserving data and essential NAS functionality such as SMB, NFS, and iSCSI. Once migrated, Docker and LXC can be set up to provide 3rd party Application services, as well as importing previously configured Virtual Machines to the new Incus powered Instances system. While TrueNAS 13.3 has received its final update, TrueNAS 13.0 will still receive critical security updates.
What’s Next: TrueNAS Goldeye
TrueNAS “Goldeye” – the codename for TrueNAS 25.10 – is currently in development, and will bring Enterprise-ready virtualization to TrueNAS. While this software is available as a nightly build, it’s not yet ready for general testing, and the focus for the coming weeks remains on further polishing the quality and features of TrueNAS 25.04. Goldeye plans will be shared starting in July 2025. For those who can’t wait, the Goldeye source code is available on Github, and developers are welcome to join in using the nightly images on a dedicated testing system.
