We are pleased to release TrueNAS 13.0-U6!

This maintenance release includes an update to the Asigra plugin, updated ports for ZFS, and fixes issues found in earlier releases. The improvements include:
  • Asigra plugin updated to 14.2.0.6
  • ZFS ports updated
Due to security vulnerabilities and maintainability issues, the S3 service is deprecated in TrueNAS CORE 13.0 and scheduled for removal in CORE 13.1. Beginning in CORE 13.0-U6, the CORE web interface generates an alert when the deprecated service is either actively running or is enabled to start on boot. Users should plan to migrate to a separately maintained MinIO plugin or otherwise move any production data away from the S3 service storage location.

See the Release Notes for more details.

Welp, guess it's time to finally re-do the docker registry at work.

Refuse/typo?

Great timing.
I'm not surprised. You thought I was joking about my time-travel adventures?

I think it's a hotfix for ZFS that fixes a bug in replication, and it was patched for both Core and SCALE?

All updated here. Wonder why it's not based on FreeBSD 13.2-RELEASE? We're still on an EOL 13.1. I supposed TrueNAS Core 13.1-RELEASE will be based on... FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE? It gets awkward with the "close, but not quite" numbering system of Core. o_O There seems to be no relationship between the TrueNAS Core versioning and the version of FreeBSD it is based on.

I'm a bit confused because from the GitHub link it doesn't look so for CORE... Maybe it was just a kind of compound update, the bug fix for SCALE and the porting for CORE (but then, there is another bullet point for the portings on CORE).
My ignorance is certainly at play here.

TrueNAS Core 13.1-RELEASE will be based on... FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE?
Iirc it was confirmed a month ago for 2024?

I think that's what it is. We're bumped to ZFS 2.1.13, meanwhile a bug is fixed for SCALE replications. It might have made more sense to split it between two bullet-points, but since they're on the same ticket they just kept it together?

IIRC it's based on 13 stable which is the development branch for the 13 and is still open and active.
How would someone know, other than outright asking the distributor?

By all accounts, any command you run would make you believe you're on an EOL FreeBSD (i.e, 13.1-RELEASE-p9):
  • freebsd-version
  • uname -a
  • cat /etc/os-release

Everything returns "13.1-RELEASE-p9".

Nothing indicates "This is based on stable/13".

Is there a way to find out on your own?

If they were running a current releng/13 it would identify itself as 13.2. I don't understand why they do not routinely sync all of their components - base and ports/packages with upstream. :frown:

For updates, we make decisions with a focus on quality.. how do we ensure fewer bugs in both the upgrade process and the software. Our QA process is better than it used to be, but we can't find all bugs in new software with a few weeks of testing. There is almost no field testing prior to an update so it needs to be carefully planned. TrueNAS 13.0 has about 2 million machine months of field testing which we want to leverage. Most of the iX customer base is running TrueNAS 13.0 and doesn't really care about what the OS is.

For new releases, we will take more risk to get improved security, features and performance. TrueNAS 13.1 is the plan for that. This will go through extensive community testing before major customers use it.

`freebsd-version -kru`
It should say `MAJOR.MINOR-STABLE`
or
`MAJOR.MINOR-RELEASE-pPATCH`

from a non-TrueNAS CORE FreeBSD system: `freebsd-update` typically does not work on `-STABLE` but you can `-STABLE` -> `-RELEASE`

-CURRENT: head of branch. Generally not used for production
-STABLE: ABI stable for the major version
-RELEASE: MFC'd fixes (errata and security) from -CURRENT into a branch

Also:
