Hello, the first thing to say hello to you all since I just registered in the forum.
I have a Dell PowerEdge T110 server with a Dell SAS Perc H200A controller that apparently works fine, since I have generated a 24Tb logical volume (6Tb x 4 hdd) and mount and access it without problem, but I...
As you may have guessed from the title, I have a problem with a drive that says it has 22 currently unreadable sectors.
It was a new drive when I installed it a couple of years ago and it has been running fine since.
The unreadable sectors finally worried me enough to make a decent effort to...
WD 2TB - Western Digital Black - /dev/ada0 (additional drive we installed for zpool)
WD 2TB - Western Digital Black - /dev/ada2 (additional drive we installed for zpool)
1TB - Seagate Barracuda 3.5 - /dev/ada1 (standard drive that comes in the Dell T310s we use)
After upgrading to 11.2-U5, I've lost the ability to read back drive temperature, all show as N/A, the SMARTD service is running though.
Sort of at a bit of a loss on what might have happened or how to resolve it?
SMART tests still run as far as I can tell, just no temperature graphs, no...
I bought two 800GB SAS SSDs and connected them to ports 12 and 13 on my R510 (yes, the internal 2.5" bays). I ran a short smart test on both of them and they look fine, been powered on ~4years but both have less than 1TB written or read to\from them. The first time I tried to create a...
Does the following seem reasonable for a homeserver:
Followed this guide.
Day 01: scrub
Day 08: SMART(long)
Day 15: scrub
Day 22: SMART(long)
[4AM for all]
[Scrubs: threshold: 10 days.]
Day 05: SMART(short)
Day 12: SMART(short)
Day 19: SMART(short)
Day 26: SMART(short)
[3AM for all]
Apologies if there is a thread already related to this, I was unable to find it in my searches. My basic issue is that I am seemingly unable to run the short and long tests on my Samsung 970 EVO drives despite their website listing these drives as supporting SMART.
This is a test...
Hi, I have a system where I used 4x 2TB Seagate Green disks. I have replaced 2 of the disks earlier, one with a similar one and one with a 4 TB WD Red. I've bought new WD 4 TB Red disks and were going to replace the rest, but haven't got there yet.
Anyhow, yesterday I was tranfering a 20 GB...
I've got a five-disk RAID Z2 array made up of WD Gold 10 TB disks that I've had running for about half a year under FreeNAS-11.1-U5. I noticed a while ago that not one of these disks has ever successfully completed a single SMART test.
It doesn't matter if I run the tests under load or right...
On my Dell server I have PERC H730P Adapter switch to HBA. The smartd fails to start at boot and manually. /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf is empty
I try turn off smart to da5 or add -d removable to S.M.A.R.T. extra options: - smartd fails to start.
Try this on FreeNAS-11.1-U5 and current test...
I updated from FreeNAS 9.10 to 11.1-stable tonight and after the reboot, the dashboard flashes a message, in the top right-hand corner, when selecting it I see
“- smartd_daemon is not running.”
When going to the services tab in the webUI I click start for S.M.A.R.T while tailing...
I have a NetApp DS4243 with 14x 8TB WD Reds connected to a LSI 9201-16e via a QSFP+ to SAS cable inside a Dell PowerEdge R610. Whenever I pull the SMART status for these drives there's only a few values available, temp, power on count. Is it normal to have so little values? Should I be concerned...
I've been running this DAS box for years now, and only after I upgraded to FreeNAS11 and now having problems (coincidence?).
I have since detached the volume for da11-da21 and also removed another volume with 8? 8TB disks which have also been having issues (I think staying connected or even...
I was getting the "WARNING smartd_daemon is not running" and even after unchecking the S.M.A.R.T. checkbox for the drives, I could still not start the S.M.A.R.T. service.
I looked at the console and it was showing "freenas smartd: Configuration file /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf parsed but has no...
I began to notice very poor performance of my FreeNAS earlier today (taking ~20min to do an rsync dry run that would usually be done in 20 seconds). After trying a couple of times, I discovered that my previously unlocked encrypted volume had locked itself. When I try to unlock it, I get stuck...
When the server starts or if I try to start SMART manually it doesn't start. The log shows:
shade smartd: Configuration file /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf parsed but has no entries
I've double checked and only the physical drives have SMART turned on, the usb drives do not. not sure what...
S.M.A.R.T. crashed and will not restart.
I tried removing S.M.A.R.T. from the usb drive and it still not starting.
System log says the following before and after removing SMART from the usb.
"Server smartd : Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d...
i have 6 HDD in raidz1-0 i think, and last night one of the disks startet makeing grinding noises, and still doing.
Smart test shor/long all passes on all disks?!? so how do i figurer out which one is doing the noise? i have 2 new disks laying around i can easily replace 1-2 drives, but...
I’ll give you a quick run down of my setup first:
Virtualised freenas instance

About once a week one particular drive gets SMART errors with...
Supermicro X11SSL-CF with six Toshiba DT01ACA3 drives connected to the LSI 3008 (FW PH15.00.03.00).
I got a critical alert today:

Hallo, ich habe mir einen Nas aus einem etwas älteren Server zusammengebaut.
Ich wollte ihn so einstellen, dass er sich runterfährt, wenn kein PC gerade im lan ist und er hochfährt sobald einer drin ist. Das ist kein Problem.
Das Problem sind jetzt die Test, was würdet ihr mir empfehlen, wie...
I updated, all was fine, then I read a post somewhere about SMART not being necessary to be turned on for the boot device (SD card/USB mirror), so I went to Storage>View Disks, clicked the boot device opened the window and unticked SMART, clicked ok, then I get some log message like...
I've tried to solve this via Google but not had any luck.
The baseboard is Supermicro X10 Xeon and the SAS drives are connected via two LSI 9211 HBAs.
When I run `smartctl -a /dev/XXX`, I get detailed attribute data for SATA HDDs only. I know that SCSI/SAS, and therefore smartctl, didn't...
I upgraded to 11.1 today, and immediately after the upgrade I got critical alerts shown for both SanDisk Extreme 32GB USB Flash Drives I use as boot devices:
CRITICAL: Dec. 27, 2017, 12:09 p.m. - Device: /dev/da1 [SAT], FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!

This might be mentioned elseware but a forum / google search didn't jump anything out at me.
When using SMART test scheduling and manually calling via smartctl in the CLI.
You can run smartctl -l selftest *drive* and it will output the results of the last test. However I...
So, I'm 4 disks into my "swap all 12 drives in my NAS with larger drives and resilver to grow my ZFS pool" project, and decided to go with 10TB Seagate Helium Enterprise drives (ST10000NM0016)
The four drives I have thus far come from two orders of two drives each. Two from Newegg...
I have a HP DL 180 Gen 9 Server with H240 HBA card and I have enabled HBA mode. I can see all the disks directly getting attached to Freenas but the SMART function is not getting started.
Can any one please help? Also If i run FreeNAS storage without SMART function will there be any...
For a full week now my server has been warning me of an error concerning one of my drives. Apparently one of them has "1 currently unreadable (pending) sector". I had to look up what it actually meant, from what I understand now it is a sector which has not been reallocated yet and...
I'm running FreeNAS 9.10.2-U4 and my setup includes 3 4TB WD Red Edition (NAS version @5400rpm).
Today I got the following email and a critical error:
CRITICAL: Aug. 1, 2017, 8:09 p.m. - Device: /dev/ada1, Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1
It seems that one of the...
Not sure where the best place to post this is as this is my first post. I cannot get the smart service to start. I have tried enabling it from the gui and shell with no joy. I fould that smart does not seem to be enabled for drive da0. I tried starting it vi shell with this command smartctl...
So, a few days ago (let's not talk about the numerous months I was shamefully ignoring the errors) I saw that one of my 3 main drives stopped working completely. By that I mean there's not a single write/read on it for a long time and the volume says it's `unavailable`. Hopefully, it's...
This week I received a critical alert because of an "unrecoverable error in one or more devices": http://illumos.org/msg/ZFS-8000-9P
After a scrub, ada1 showed 11 checksum errors so I ran a long SMART test. These are the results:
# smartctl -a /dev/ada1
Update: I ended up RMAing the drive as it was *just* within the 3 year WD Red warranty (last month). Included the SMART error log. No questions asked.
Also got a spare one to prevent a similar lengthy downtime in the future. And finally I made sure all drives were selected in the (short/long)...
I'm setting up a new FreeNAS 9.10 build on an ASRock C2750D4I motherboard.
The default BIOS settings under `Advanced -> Storage Configuration` are:
I have two questions:
1. The `Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T.` needs to be switched to `Enabled`, right?
2. Are there any other...
I'm a bit lost here. I'm getting
Device: /dev/ada4, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
So I ran a Long SMART test and followed it up with a Scrub of my volume. I've done this twice now and I'm still being told there is unreadable sectors.
=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
Buongiorno a tutti! ;)
I have a problem with a disk of my RAID-Z2, are some months the there are 5 pending sectors and I have tried to solve this problem in several ways but without success. This are the SMART results:
smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [FreeBSD 10.3-STABLE amd64] (local build)...
I have my FreeNAS system for a while now, and i am wondering a little bit about the hdd access and spindown for them. I also have a question for the load cyle count.
First of all, I have 4 WD Red with 4TB, SMART attributes are looking like this:
D# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE...
Preface.... This may be a dumb question....
Ok, I have used 126.96.36.199, 188.8.131.52, 9.3, and am now running the most current version of 9.10.1-U4. My hardware is beyond recommended specs. I have looked for a few days now for this exact question and cant seem to find a specific answer (again, maybe...
Woke up this morning with an alert from my freenas telling me this:
smartd: Device: /dev/ada2, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!
Allright, lets check what´s up. SMART results for drive:
smartctl -a /dev/ada2
smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [FreeBSD 10.3-STABLE amd64] (local...
I recently installed FreeNAS 9.10 on a HP MicroServer Gen 8 with two Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB disks in a ZFS mirror configuration.
All is fine except that in the SMART data I can see that the emergency retract count is going up for both drives each time I turn the server on/off even...
I understand that ID 5, 197 and 198 should all be zero values. Anything in these fields are indicators of a pending drive failure and that I can RMA the device if I see those numbers cropping up.
I have a drive that keeps sending me an email error 'Device: /dev/ada0, Self-Test Log error...
So last night I had an apparent glitch in my server--one of my drives dropped offline, then came back online a few minutes later. I got an email alert that the pool was degraded, and another that it was resilvering. After four minutes, the disk was resilvered and the pool is fine. When I got...
I wanted to share my scripts because I think I'm not the only one who wants to monitor his FreeNAS server a bit more closely and in a more personalized way than the automatic nightly emails would do.
Please note that you're the only one responsible of what you do in the CLI so don't blame me if...
