**EDIT** SOLVED IN TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.4.2

I've noticed something a touch odd where the GUI for reporting disk temps never seems to update the temps for my HDDs until I reboot the system; and only then it'll set a temp & never change it until the next reboot. My NVMe drives seems to report real-time, and so does everything else.

To make it more confusing I have HDDs from both WesternDigital and Seagate; both experience the same oddity so I'm fairly certain it'd have something to do with TrueNas.

^^Please note that sda is a Seagate drive and sdb is WesternDigital... notice how temps are 100% static for weeks on end. This is over the summer with no AC in the room and with scrubs, smart tests, heatwaves, etc. It shouldn't be static. I had days where it was 40*c outside, and I had nights where it was 12*c at night during this period.

Here is the GUI for the same two disks on an hour running graph, both are the highest temps during a heatwave & a scrub running from several weeks ago:

Here is the smartctl -a output for both for them respectively:
Code:
#smartctl -a -v 1,raw48:54 /dev/sda -v 7,raw48:54 -v 195,raw48:54

^^From the above example GUI is showing 47*c and 46*c for sda and sdb respectively, when in reality they are sitting 40*c and 38*c.

Full system details in signature.

This isn't a major issue, but does make me wonder if my email alerts would ever trigger & wondering if there is an easy fix or if I should submit a Jira ticket for this (or if one already exists).

Something to note is that my disks are connecting by mix of HBA and directly to the motherboard - all HDDs exhibit this oddity with the reporting GUI.

I also have no earthly idea when this started - for all I know I could have been experiencing this ever since I switched over to scale.

*I have also had at least 1 clean install with re-importing of settings during this 6 month period, so I'm uncertain if that'd be a viable solution.

*minor edits for typos & clarity

**Ticket created

After updating to 22.12.4 I now get temperatures reporting in 'm' (meters?)... not sure what to do with that info:

Only seems to affect HDDs still.

Did you look to see if there was a bug report? If not, I'd recommend submitting one. Also, I don't want to assume, what version of TrueNAS is this for?

Came here to say I'm seeing "m" for HDD temps too after updating to 22.12.4

Me too, though it does say C sideways on the side, something got messed up here in latest update. If m is meters would love to see the conversion factor!

I'm willing to bet it is the language you have set. Provide that information if you report a bug.

Jira ticket is edited into the bottom of the post, official response is that reporting will be remade from the ground up in Cobia & that 22.12.4 is the last update for Bluefin so no fix:

Can't reproduce this unfortunately. Also, 22.12.4 will be the last update for 22.12. train so it won't be fixed. However, the entire reporting stack was rewritten from scratch and uses modern tools to gather this information starting in 23.10. I'd suggest trying 23.10-RC.1 to see if this problem persists. Or you can hold off for a bit longer and wait for 23.10.0.

I so far haven't figured out how to convert meters into degrees as it seems each drive has a different distance for even equivilant temperatures (in celsius).

If anyone has a theoretical degree in physics though I'd love to hear your take on this as of yet unexplored method of measurement of our universe :)

It seems that my average temps in the storage dashboard are almost 14,000 times hotter than the sun's core & that my server is now progressing into a powerful supernova. I look forward to my data trove being the new centre of all nearby solar systems.

The fact it is doing this without any data loss is a powerful advertisement to the robust nature of zfs.

Looks like you need better fans to me. Just saying.

Did you try service middleware restart? I doubt it will change your elevation chart, but maybe it will make it more responsive and less prone to going supernova.

Your disks are bit hotter than mine, but my lowest is much better

honestly I was looking for that command & was simply going to make a chron to run it every 4 hours or something... but I think since the official response is wait for Corbia, I'll just do that

Nothing prevents you doing both.

Welp:
# service middleware restart
Failed to restart middleware.service: Unit middleware.service not found.

**Edit, figured it out - 'middlewared' (add a 'd') was the magic change. Uhh, no dice - tried clearing reporting history as well, but we're still reporting in meters.

I keep trying to figure this out. Maybe the meters is the distance from the drive you have to be to not get vaporized. That should then allow you to calculate an approximate drive temperature.
