Let's start with a description of your setup…
We're especially interested in knowing if this is bare metal or virtualised (danger ahead!) and to what controller the drives are attached. Also the model of the drives, but we'll know it from the next step, namely the output of smartctl -a /dev/sdX, for each drive (and nicely presented within CODE tags for readability, please).

"Hold my beer!" LTT style? This is a great, proven, way of losing data.
If the content of this pool is of any relevance to you, begin by making a backup before attempting any change which may not be reversed.
Thank you for your help
Code:
nothing@truenas:/var/log$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdc

I do have a backup so its not the end of the world if all goes pear shaped. However i would hope to avoid having to start from scratch - that will be a bummer

Honestly i read ALOT before asking - i know it seems like im going gun-ho but im not, I promise :)

The drive that is currently at /dev/sdc (mind that this may change across reboots!) looks healthy. What about the others, especially the two which are reported as "degraded"?
And, again, how and to what are they attached? Motherboard controller? SAS HBA? SATA PCIe card? No loose cable, data and/or power?

Looking again at your first post, the screenshot... first, why are you using sudo? Second, that too many errors with 0 errors is strange. Can you post the long smart test result of the degraded disks?

This might be solvable with a simple zpool clear (don't run such command yet).

Could you post the current output of zpool status as well?

Honestly i read ALOT before asking - i know it seems like im going gun-ho but im not, I promise :)
It doesn't sound very convincing after the following statement.
i have no idea what any of this jargon means - no idea what a vdev is.

As @Etorix wrote, please tell us about your system.

Anyway - from this point as I said above, i wont do anything without checking this thread first.

here is the entire breakdown step by step what happened so far:

1) system reported 2 degraded drives ( i panicked , clearly)
-ran scrub twice , ran smartctl test on degraded hdd

2) I had 1 replacement HDD that i added via USB enclosure ( i understand this is not supported as a long term solution ) that i used to perform a replace operation prematurely, since now, I know degraded doesn't necessarily spell a doomed drive (mistake #1)

3) Now I have 6 16TB HDD attached to the system (5 pool drives, 1 replaced drive )

1690042880671.png

#03 is the replaced drive that i should have waited to check the smartctl -a on - but no use crying over spilled milk :(
#02 is sdc that appears that I may be able to zpool clear the the errors on
the one in the enclosure is currently sdf
1690043044883.png

4) If I try to move them around, ie: remove the replaced drive #03 - weird things happen like the new drive gets marked "UNAVAIL"

This is where im at now

current running (started before my promise to not touch the system) :

Again thank you so much for your help

The list of things that happened is of great help in vanishing confusion.

Not trying to be a dick, but please list your hardware as per forum rules.

Still waiting for the zpool status and the degraded drives smart output.

We (as forum) had sadly quite a few cases of LTT inspired users asking for help because their system didn't work. My suggestion is to look into the resource section of the forum (or read my signature) to find good readings about TN and ZFS in general.

From your post it isn't clear which of the 5 on board drives is not in the pool.

You can be rough with me if im breaking the rules - i try not to break rules.. it just that i get desperate to solve the issue and i get ahead of myself and those that are trying to help me - ill do better

I only have 4 ports on the mobo itself - no room for a 5th (its also pretty tight fit)

would it be better to use the 4 on the mobo then one of the cheap garbage controller? will that alleviate the situation?

You should either use the ports on your motherboard or an HBA, but you could try using a SATA controller (not a port multiplier).

Good news is your drives are healthy.

I believe it would solve the issue as long as you use only a single port on that port multiplier.

Do the port switching, then zpool clear, replace the external USB drive with the old (internal) drive and run a scrub. You should be fine.

As a side note, how are you connecting your boot drive? Internal USB? Backplate M.2 slot?

Also, since we are here, remember that Realtek NICs are not compatibile with TN, core or scale.

Wasnt a cheap setup :( - and i bottlenecked it like a moron with that garbage controller
