Hi,
Built my first FreeNAS.
Here is the hardware list: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/NbpG3C
I installed SSD just for jails (for better transcoding)
I initially had some Media on the SSD (when i was testing the FreeNAS)....which I want to copy over to my new NAS drives.
The speed I am getting...
Hello all,
The config scenario I want to build revolves around HP's Microserver Gen8. I plan to buy a second Gen8 since the price is dirt cheap with the basic config, 190 pounds for the lowest config.
Now these little cubes support 16Gb of RAM max which is the limiting factor into getting more...
I'm building my first FreeNAS system and am pondering what type of device to use for an SLOG device. The main intent for the system is file storage, but I will probably run one or two VMs as well, and the reading I have done indicates that having an SSD for the SLOG device should improve...
Hi all.
I'm building a new VMware lab environment and part of it is the storage. My plan is to use the following:
Server: HP DL380 G8 with two Xeon E5-2670 with 256GB Memory and second drive bay for a total of 16 2.5" drives
Drives: 16x Samsung 850 Pro 1TGB 2.5" SSD
Boot Device: 16GB Sandisk...
I'm planning to upgrade my FreeNAS box, and one of the things that I plan on doing is using an SSD for the boot drive. Given that SSDs have a finite number of writes, it seems unwise to write tons and tons of data just for testing. Am I correct? What is considered best-practice for burning in...
I'm looking at using FreeNAS to act as the iSCSI storage in a large QEMU/KVM environment. The idea is to find a build that works really well, and add identical SANs to the environment as it grows. I just assembled the first prototype and am concerned with the initial performance tests.
Let's...
Hello there,
first time writing here.
I'm thinking to build a FreeNAS system at work that should be used as common datastore for 2 esxi 6.0 hosts (2xDL360gen9 with actual on board raid5 datastore each). I've build some FreeNAS system for me (HP Gen8 Microserver) and friends but nothing as big as...
Hello, New to FreeNAS but many years in the biz. This is a whole new thing for me, unrelated to what I have done previously (Novell/3Ware/and even older) systems.
I have a old I7-950 3Ghz on a GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R mobo and 6GB that was a desktop. I also have a AMCC 9650SE-12ML controller...
Build:
Mobo: ASRock B85M-ITX
RAM: 2x 8GB Vulcan DDR3 1600 MHz (I know, no ECC. Eventually with full upgrade...)
CPU: Haswell i5, can't remember specific chip
PSU: Rosewill 450 Watt Gold
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO, model MZ-7TE120
Some HGST Deskstar 2TB NAS Drive, if it matters
I get very peculiar...
Hello,
I've picked up a TS140 and I'd like to use the fastest possible storage for bhyeve/jails. I know I can use a standard SSD on SATA, but I'm trying to find out if I can use:
Samsung 960 EVO Series - PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD
with a
Mailiya M.2 PCIe to PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter
I've been...
Hi,
I'm building a FreeNAS server from an old Mac Pro. I've read that booting from a USB Flash drive could be problematic on the Mac Pro, so I'm considering using a PCIe SATA Adapter...
I just learned that the Intel DC S3710 firmware can be set to use 512e sector size (the default) or 4K.
Intel calls the setting the "physical sector size" but it seems to me that you're really changing the logical sector size.
Terminology aside, is there any benefit to doing this on a SLOG device?
Hallo Zusammen,
Hey guys,
Now that FREENAS 10 is out and supports virtualization I've decided to upgrade my modest HP Proliant ML310e G8 with a HP DL360e G8. I know, I know.. It's not that big of a leap, but it's for home use.
So I bought a used HP DL360e without disks. I want to run a few VMs on this new...
Hi, I am trying to install FreeNAS to my 30gig SSD, but I keep getting the error that's in my title. It used to be a Win 10 disk and I never really formatted it, but should that really matter? Thanks for any help!
Hi
I have been trying to tweak the Auxiliary parameters and System Tunables to perform best possible on SMB to Mac OS X and Windows 7/10
Please help me with my read speeds what parameter have I tweaked the wrong way?
I use a 10 G setup and I have almost full throughput using iperf.
I have add...
Hi there
Am just about to push the order button on a new FreeNAS build.
This is my current part list:

Short simple version: I'm setting up my FreeNAS build to handle general file serving and as a ESXi VM store. I got very lucky with the ZIL, which got upgraded to a top-end Intel P3700 datacenter SSD via RMA, and now I don't know how to make best use of that device. My hardware...
I'm not even convinced that SSD caching is a best practice first off, so here's my --possibly stupid, but please humor me-- question:
Say I have 12x 2TB hard drives on my volume (the type of raid here doesn't really come in play with pertaining to the question, but say I use a RAIDZ2 -- being...
Hello. First time poster here on this forum. I've been using freenas on and off for quite a few years and moved my home storage array to freenas full time now as my sole array.
Looking for some help with figuring out what or even if something is in fact wrong with one of my pools. If i posted...
Hello,
I've been using FreeNAS for a little while and it's been working great. Thank you to the people who have created this product!
I use this as storage for a small VMware home lab. Not a lot of read/writes in a day and no need for high capacity, only need a couple hundred GB.
Storage is...
I'm starting to plan a new system and would appreciate some recommendations on selecting device(s) for the boot drive. If I did not want to boot from a USB stick or get an SSD that uses up a SATA port, it seems that the most likely option is a PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD. Most of those are M.2 connector...
Hi,
I have 9 x WD Red 6 TB ( RAIDZ1) and 1 x 256 GB SSD for jails...
I have no problems on HDDs.. But on SSD I sometimes get the error below..
Nov 25 07:52:13 freenas (ada10:ahcich15:0:0:0): WRITE_FPDMA_QUEUED. ACB: 61 00 a0 8c 3e 40 12 00 00 01 00 00

I am re configuring one of our SuperMicro boxes, which connects via 4x 1gbE to ESXi 6.0u2. We had a slow/crappy SSD SLOG for an 8 disk raid10, and decided to replace it as well as add in 2 Intel 750 PCIe NVMe cards. They do have their own full 8x PCIe channel, even though they only require 4x...
Hi, I want to build a new NAS with Micron P420m SSDs based in PCIe to use with L2ARC and SLOG but I do not found any information about compatibility with these units.
If someone has any type of info about them it would be a great help.
Thank you,
My current configuration is as follows: FreeNAS is on 2 mirrored USB-Sticks, the jails are on mirrored SSDs and Transmission uses the main pool for torrent downloads.
The problem with this setup is fragmentation and consequently reduced performance of the main pool, which i would like to...
