ESD deserves a special mention. It’s a silent killer and it can happen instantly. Worse, sometimes the effects don’t manifest until later, when the appliance is stressed.
I relearned that lesson the hard way this year when I tried to resurrect my C2750D4I server. Granted, I went through 3 boards until I was finally sent a version 1.03 with the latest firmware and a burn in test at iXSystems, but in the process, 2 sticks of precious 16GB UDIMMs for the C2750D4I series bit the dust.
presumably, I had not been careful enough.
so now the backup server will feature but 48GB of RAM (I still had the four OEM sticks of 8GB each). The paid for memtest sniffled out the slightly damaged RAM like a truffle hound. One stick had occasional ECC errors popping during testing (corrected but why take the chance) while the other RAM stick was so far gone that the system would not post with it.
