I just purchased an i3-8100 and a Supermicro X11SSM-F-O motherboard plus 16GB Kingston ECC memory. Can someone tell me confidently if this motherboard will support the 8th gen i3 processor before I open the box (seems like I need to return it)? I read conflicting things on this. I of course don't care about being able to use the UHD onboard graphics. Related post which seems to say I need to either return the motherboard or the CPU

CPU specs: https://ark.intel.com/products/126688/Intel-Core-i3-8100-Processor-6M-Cache-3-60-GHz-

If I keep the CPU: Any recommendations for a great MB that supports 8th gen i3? Supermicro X11SCH-LN4F?

If I keep the motherboard: will the Pentium G5500 work? This is also a newer Coffee Lake processor.

Thank you!

I don't think the X11SSM-F-O is compatible with Coffee lake Gen CPUs, which would include the 8100 and the G5500. It specifically says 5th and 6th gen but will probably work with 7th gen. You could use any 7th gen i3 or Xeon 1200 series (I have an i3-7320 in an X11SSH-CTF which says the same). Intel changed something with the 8th gen to make CPUs and motherboards not backwards compatible with 7th gen products even though they are both LGA 1151.

That LN4F is still new so not sure how many Freenas users can vouch for it's compatibility, but it will be compatible with the 8th gen i3. I would also think it should work Freenas just fine, but someone else may know for sure.

Ordered an X11SCH-LN4F board from Ace Micro to use with the i3-8100. Will see if it actually ships. Fingers crossed...
