Just getting a FreeNAS box built, and reading in various areas.

Are you saying there may be issues with getting FreeNAS to see UPS devices? And NUT is a dead project?

Many of us have zero problems with our UPS devices using NUT as it exists today. You'll find many recommendations in the forum if you search. I'll give you one for starters - a CyberPower 1500PFCLCD.

I wouldn't describe NUT as a dead project, but you just have to look at its github to see that it's not a very active project. Seems to be just part timers with little time or money. (Not criticizing, I'm happy it exists at all!)

Thanks!

The UPS I have is the APC Back-UPS RS 1000MS.

Where do I look to verify that this unit will work? Sorry, I have never see github, don't know how it works.

First space to look is here: https://networkupstools.org/stable-hcl.html

Your specific UPS is not on the list. Typically advice here would range from "select the closest one on the list (the 500 in your case) and try that driver", to "try usbhid-ups, if not work then try the others".

A search for your UPS on the forum shows nothing to me, so you may be on your own to experiment here.

If it were me I'd try a device name for one that uses the driver "usbhid-ups" first and see if the UPS shows up on the network as this from Manual Section 12.17 "For USB devices, the easiest way to determine the correct device name is to enable the Show console messages option in System ➞ Advanced. Plug in the USB device and look for a /dev/ugen or /dev/uhid device name in the console messages." If no show then I'd move to the 500 and the driver selection in https://networkupstools.org/docs/man/genericups.html

There are lots of forum postings describing this type of process in detail.

Maybe someone else who has the same unit will post their experience.

That sounds like a very old model. I remember them, and a quick Google search turned up this:
https://www.cnet.com/products/apc-back-ups-rs-1000-ups-600-watt-1000-va-series/
The spec says it came with a USB cable. Do you still have it? That UPS is listed in the dropdown in FreeNAS.
