TrueNAS Scale, FreeBSD install/boot successfully; booting TrueNAS Core, FreeNAS result in kernel failure

Hello!

I’ve been having a hard time getting TrueNAS Core up and running on a new server (having tried versions 13, 12, and 11).

Previous posts similar to this topic (#1 | #2 | #3) have cited issues with memory or the boot drive as the likely culprit. However, I’m able to install both the latest release of Scale and FreeBSD on this same system without issues, which has me scratching my head.
  • PowerEdge R750
  • Intel Xeon Silver 4310
  • 16GB RDIMM x2
  • Booting from 2 mirrored SSDs managed by a Dell BOSS-S2 controller.
  • Dell HBA355i storage controller managing SAS drives

I get the same results installing either in BIOS mode or with secure boot disabled in UEFI: the installer completes, but when I boot the OS I get a kernel panic (screenshot).

My gut tells me my problem lies in the boot drive, but why would Scale install & run seamlessly while the FreeNAS/Core OSs fail to boot?

That's an odd one. Which version of FreeBSD did you test this with?

That should be broadly similar to recent TrueNAS Core, which really doesn't lead us anywhere...

I'd say we should get a better look at the panic. Can you please use the iDRAC serial console so we can look at the full boot process?
I haven't tried Dell's native viewer, but you should be able to log in via SSH to iDRAC and use your favorite client to record arbitrary lengths of scrollback.

  • Booting from 2 mirrored SSDs managed by a Dell BOSS-S2 controller.

Could it be that trying to boot TrueNAS from drives running on an unsupported RAID card is what is causing the panic?
Can you take the BOSS-S2 RAID card out of the equation and connect the SSDs directly to the motherboard?

It's a distinct possibility, but since everything else works, more info would be nice to narrow things down.

Yes, as per the above (emphasis mine).
Missed that.

I remember a similar thread that got resolved after a bug report was submitted and a iX's engineer fixed something.

Both FreeBSD 13.1 & 13.2 install/run without problems. Could this be caused by certain necessary drivers in the latest FreeBSD releases that are not yet included in Core?

Possibly missing patches or something, but it's a bit weird.

There are a couple of things from the boot log that catch my attention:
  1. The Broadcom driver does not seem to be a happy camper, and after it seems to freak out, the PCI driver also starts complaining.
  2. The "CPU supports Enhanced Speedstep, but is not recognized." thing is suspicious. Are you running the latest system firmware? M
  3. The panic's traceback seems to originate within the Broadcom driver.
So, Broadcom NICs have never really worked well with FreeBSD, so the low-hanging fruit is to try a different NIC. The slightly less-low-hanging fruit is to figure out what is up with the Broadcom driver.

The line:

ahci0: AHCI v1.31 with 2 6Gbps ports, Port Multiplier not supported

Is also disturbing if that's what your mirrored boot disks are connected to.

I'm pretty sure that's just boilerplate from the driver, the BOSS-S2 as Dell calls it has an unremarkable SATA controller from Marvell or ASMedia or something to that effect, with two ports and crap-grade integrated RAID capabilities that are meant to be somewhat enough for OS boot media.
