I have loaded trunas core onto one of my Terramaster NAS and all seems to be working but now i have no control over the fan speed, is there any way I can do this in truenas core.

Maximum Supported Memory6G(2 G +4 G)

That's very concerning. I'd be far more concerned about that before you worry about the fan speed (which you're not very likely to be able to control through any "standard" method).

Two of my 1.3TB drives are getting a little hot despite being set to turn off after 10 mins, so it's a little worrying, is there no way to be able to control the fan speed it is running but not too fast, did attempt to go into the bios, but I think I can only access this if I was to reinstall the TM USB boot, I suspect the fan is either hardware controlled or it's running via the last commend used via the TM software, so unless I can solve it I may have to revert which would be a shame as it creates a whole load of other problems hence the change over.

You ignored my point.

6GB RAM is a recipe for disaster with ZFS.

You should seek other options for that hardware even if you get fan control working.

No worries mate, he's got WD Red SMRs in there, it's a beauty!

This is likely controlled in a non-standard way. I'd start by pulling out a multimeter to see what voltage the fan is gettng. Maybe hack into another set of wires to get more voltage and stick it on a knob.

Err, where did I ever mention it had only 6 gig of ram?? It's actually got 12gig ram.
That's part of the problem here... you didn't, but what you did was say this:

Terramaster F5-221

So I went to the internet and searched for that, which turned up this site:

And if I look on the Specification page, I find the table from which I copied the Maximum Supported Memory details in my post above... which suggests that the maximum RAM for that unit is 6GB.

If you have a different model or more recent variants somehow allow more RAM, good for you.

Ahh! It's a case of don't believe everything you read on the internet.

Even TM say you can only add 4gig of RAM, but that's bull, it's actually got 10 gig it's my other TM NAS that's got 14gig, same F5-221.

Fan speed was controllable in the original software, if I remember right it's only a two wire fan and not other wires, so I suspect finding a higher voltage will be hard, so thought that maybe someone else had run Truenas on the F5-221 and had found a solution.

You might get something useful out of this....

It isn't likely to help much with CORE; but maybe with SCALE:

Hi, what memory chip are you adding to get more than 10GB?
I set the bios on my two F5-221s to run the fans at max, little noisy with both of them sitting on my desk, but each runs 5 disks.
With the room at 22°C (72°F), CPU runs at around 31°C, drives at 26 to 34°C.
When I first bought my F5-221s I used Seagate ST2000DM001 desktop drives and TOS 5 couldn't handle them. But TrueNAS SCALE runs them like a champ!

Very fine point for you here.
But the Forum Rules, in big and bold red letters at the top of each page, require you to disclose your hardware so others could help… and you failed to do that, leaving poor @sretalla searching the big unreliable Internet to fill in the void. So please describe your hardware in tedious details.
A solution to the fan control issue may lie in the specifications of your motherboard.

Hello All,

Just installed TrueNas Scale on my Terramaster F4 423. I don't have the bare bone MB spec yet as that will be custom a build but everything else is listed in my signature.

I have just read this thread and was wondering if anybody has further advise for a script to use or tool to use for controlling my twin rear fans that now are running at max.

Are there any apps in the catalog that now cover or has there been any further development with regards the above subject?

TIA

@sretalla

Good Morning..

I am a convert from TOS5.x to TrueNAS

Love TrueNAS...

All works well except for Fan control..

Sorry to ask and I can imagine you are fed up with this subject.

Currently Bluefin GUI does not display the HDD temperatures successfully and from research I believe there is a bug ticket in the works for this in general bug.

Ran Smartctl options in shell via sudo and and details including temp states are listed successfully on both NVMe and HDD.

I have been searching for a script to run in tasks to bring my twin rear fans back down from Max to a smart state in relation to unit component temperature as they were run before successfully by the TOS5.x platform.

To save time wasted, tunneling down scripts that may or don't work do you know of any solutions that are close?

If you have a pointer it would be much appreciated and then I would look to experiment and if successful post the script here if I get it working for my model.

Signature has most of the HW details I can provide. I am assuming my MB is classed as a Micro MB.

Any direction, input and your patience would be most appreciated.

TIA

Just a quick update.. I have managed to setup a good slope in the BIOS for the smart PWM fan control and it is driven by both the system and CPU temp. as the design is a air drawn through the whole system it also keeps the drives cool and as the drives are always cooler than the CPU and system then the smart fan function in the BIOS protects the drives very well.

For the Terramaster F4 423 with TrueNAS installed, the values listed below work well and keep the temperature stable between 36c to 41c.

Fan off 32c
Fan start 33c
Fan full speed 65c
Fan PWM start at 69
Fan PWM Slope 8
