Hi All,
I finished getting my NAS up and running on a terramaster f5-221. The F5 has 5 bays available but my 5th bay is used for running Truenas OS. I read its not recommended to run Truenas on a USB drive but has anyone figured out another way so I could free up the 5th drive?

Thanks!

Welcome,

The recommendation against "USB drives" is more a result of the lower-quality flash chips and controllers in USB sticks - they don't tend to have the same amount of wear-leveling and endurance as an SSD. Using something like a USB-to-SATA cable or USB-to-M.2 adapter, with a "regular" SSD, can yield great results while freeing up your 5th bay.

As a side note, you'll also want to ensure that you upgrade the RAM in your unit to the maximum 10GB - TrueNAS recommends 16GB of RAM, but if you are using it purely for file storage you may be able to run with 8GB.

I would've never thought about USB to SSD! I'll give that a try. Thanks!

And yes, I threw in an extra 8gb (10gb total). Just using it for Time Machine backup and file storage.
