Hello guys. i keep getting these emails:

"SMART error (FailedReadSmartSelfTestLog) detected on host: nas"
Code:
This message was generated by the smartd daemon running on:

   host name: nas
   DNS domain: bla@bla.org

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:

Device: /dev/ada3, Read SMART Self-Test Log Failed

Device info:
WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0, S/N:WD-BLABLA, WWN:5-0014ee-BLABLABLA, FW:82.00A82, 4.00 TB

For details see host's SYSLOG.

You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
No additional messages about this problem will be sent.

I get this for all 4 drives every now and then. sometimes all, sometimes only some of them. The HDDs are rather new and im triing to figure out if some have factory faults and need to be replaced or why this errors keep comming. I triied to take a look at the syslogs but could locate it in the filesystem. So i used smartctl "for further investigation".

If anybody with experience could please take a look and tell me whats wrong or what other information you would need? Thanks!

I did run a long scan with smartctl -t long /dev/adaXX and did run smartctl -a /dev/adaXX afterwards resulting in this for HDD0 (i replaced some information with "BLABLABLA").:
Code:
smartctl -a /dev/ada0
smartctl 6.3 2014-07-26 r3976 [FreeBSD 9.3-RELEASE-p12 amd64] (local build)

Post your system specs and the version of FreeNAS you are running, might help narrow the cause or allow us to make a suggestion. The drives look fine, could be the SATA cables you are using.

Are you idling the drives and setting smartctl to "don't wake up drives to read SMART data"?

"SMART error (FailedReadSmartSelfTestLog) detected on host: nas"
<wildspeculation>
This looks like a failure by FreeNAS to read the SMART data, which makes me wonder whether you have any power saving settings for your drives, and what you have for Power Mode in your SMART Service settings.
</wildspeculation>

... but I see Eric beat me to it.

The hardware is basically the mini they sell on this side with anoder case (node 304 and) and PSU (360W seasonic G-360). 4*4TB WD Red drives as you can see above. Booted from mirrored 8GB USB Sticks (I didnt get this SATA Memory Stick from the mini).

Services->Smart->Powermode is on Never-Check Devices regardless of its power mode.

I also can not remember and wouldnt have set any energy saving options anywhere. Maybe there are some in the Bios by default? In the bios i mainly only changes a smart enabled option to on if i remember correctly (no screen attached and IPMI due to java not currently working).

I do the smart short tests every hour and the above error is rare. Happens every few days so far. Might be during some overload conditions while still moveing data on the box or so? not sure. Anyway it would be nice to knwo what it is.

The settings are in Storage | View Disks, but if you didn't set them then they should remain unset.

Are you running hourly SMART tests (Tasks), or are you just checking the SMART data hourly (Services)? Hourly SMART tests is probably too frequent, partly because drives have limited space for SMART test history and partly because the tests do put some stress on a drive. Weekly short tests is probably more appropriate, but opinions differ.

- power management is disabled.

- my information was incorrect. i did the short test by task once a day. i did set it to once a week now and did set the long test once a month now.

It is very clear from your postings that the drives are conducting a short test once a day and an extended test periodically. Not sure why folks are asking about the power modes when the data is in the drive SMART data.

Did you change out the SATA cable as I suggested? This is most likely your problem, and what I'm saying is there is no other indication the drive has failed so the cable is the most suspect hardware.
You also didn't post your system specs which if it isn't the SATA cable, that info may assist us to help you.

In my defense, the LCC/Power Cycle Count ratio is ambiguous in this case.

In any case, the SATA cable is a quick and easy troubleshooting step that never hurts.

Changing the cables and setting back the small smart test intervall to daily for further tracking of the issue.

Do you need anything else apart from theese specs?

Specs look fine, what about the boot device? Although I doubt it is suspect at all.

To test for your failure I'd recommend conducting a long test nightly if you can swing it for at least 2 weeks, then roll back to short tests daily and long tests either weekly or whatever you like. I like weekly but I don't have a lot of activity either. I still think it's the cable.
