Hey everyone. Recieved the following email last night after my automated short SMART test ran

" Device: /dev/ada2, Self test log error count increased from 0 to 1"

Below is my test results I just pulled from that drive. Any ideas? Drive is passed warranty but has been well taken care of. This is a part of a raidz2 pool with 4x3tb drives.

SMART attributes look perfect, but if failed the short SMART test, you could try resilvering it, a rewrite could fix it, then run an extended SMART test to confirm, or replace it now.

Well I ran long and short tests and drive continues to increase error count (currently at 5). All the SMART outputs are the same from above. I ordered and have a new WD Red NAS drive available to swap the drives. Any suggestions on how to stop the current disk and replace with a new one?

Reading the manual would be a good start. Otherwise, some brilliant member of the community has written a resource on the subject.

Need to check the warranty. Mine were a year over so I was on my own. I think they are 3yrs.

The experts can weigh in here but I would do another long smart test and call WD with the results. Likely they will just say send it back

Sometimes, some types of errors will clear up on their own, others are just going to get worse. If you could share the output of smartctl -x /dev/da# substituting your actual drive number for where I put da#, which should look something like this:

For what it's worth my drive progressively threw more errors. I think I was at 5-6 when I replaced it.

This error, when you see it, usually is a bad indicator on a WD drive.

The drive is failing both Extended and Short self tests. It is definitely time to send it back. Simple, the drive should never fail a self test.
It doesn't say it has a bad block or a reallocated sector, but if it is getting a read failure, it is dying.
At least it happened while it is under warranty.
