Hi

I have put a new hard drive in and immediately received

Jun 8 15:56:13 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Jun 8 15:56:13 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Jun 8 16:26:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Jun 8 16:26:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Jun 8 16:26:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Jun 8 16:26:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Jun 8 16:56:13 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Jun 8 16:56:13 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Jun 8 16:56:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Jun 8 16:56:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Offline uncorrectable sectors

It is showing up as critical, but as it's a new drive - is it just telling me that there are some issues but it will keep away from them?
Can I tell it to disregard these sectors?
or should I just put another HDD in?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Glenn

Did you not burn in this new drive when you got it ?

If you value your data, you shouldn't disregard any errors. If the disk is new, just RMA it and get another one.

Read my link to Hard Drive Troubleshooting but based only on your posting, you do have a failing hard drive.

Run smartctl -a /dev/ada0 and post the output, this will provide us data on how to proceed. Pending sectors is not the end of the world, need other data to justify it.

You should run the tests I describe in my guide, your problem is easily diagnosed. With any luck it's not so tragic but worst case you will need to RMA drive drive, if it's under warranty.

Good Luck!

I have had several drives, more than three in recent history, many more over the years, that were bad on day one.
One of those was just last week.
Do testing like @joeschmuck said.
Good luck.

Have you thought to check the cable? I'm not sure if those specific errors can be explained by a bad or badly connected cable, but it's worth a shot if you have another one nearby.

As mentioned by the others, hopefully you're still in the burn-in/data transfer phase so haven't put your real data in the care of this drive while it's safety is in question.

No. This is telling you that the drive has a hard failure and needs to be replaced. Sometimes, brand new drives can be bad for a variety of reasons.

If it is new, it should be in warranty, don't try to keep using it, send it back for a replacement.

Not a big thing in this case, but for longer listings, it makes easier reading if you put your text in code tags so it looks like this:
Code:
Jun 8 15:56:13 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Jun 8 15:56:13 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Jun 8 16:26:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Jun 8 16:26:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Jun 8 16:26:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Jun 8 16:26:14 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Jun 8 16:56:13 TARDIS smartd[2832]: Device: /dev/ada0, 72 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

You get a different error message for a connection issue however this is why I recommended running a few tests and posting the results. If there are only "pending" errors and nothing else after a SMART Long/Extended test then these may go away. The best test to run is badblocks and if the pending sectors do not clear then I'd RMA the drive. Could a power glitch caused it? failing power supply? Yes but it's speculation at this point.
