  • No, the size and power are nice, but I really need more space/expansion on the board.

I have a i3-4130 CPU on a C224 motherboard sporting 16GB of RAM [...]

Could you please tell me what ram are you using? I'm planning the same config and just want to be sure to buy something that works for sure with this mobo.
Thanks

and that they're "out of warranty" on the C226. Though again I don't know what that really will mean in practice.

I am sure that means that 'You can try the Haswell i5/i7 and turn your MB into a guinea pig, but don't bother us if something goes wrong or even thing about an RMA because it breaks/forfeits the Warranty.

I don't know, but I'm using Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B with my C224 + i3-4330. I ran memtest overnight and have been doing burn-in stuff for the past couple of days and no problems so far.

Just though I'd add - even though Kingston KVR16E11/8I is not listed as compatible RAM by ASRock for the E3C226D2I it works perfectly @ 1600MHz

I've ordered 8gb sticks Kingston KVR16LE11L/8 low voltage 1600mhz and even if not listed seem to work fine

Another build report (FreeNAS 9.2.1.3) here:

Motherboard: AsRock E3C226D2I
CPU: Intel G3220
Cooling: Noctua NH-U12P (needs a small mod to fit)
RAM: 2x Kingston KVR16E11/8
HDD: 4x 2TB WD Red
PSU: Seasonic G360
Case: Fractal Design Node 304
UPS: Eaton 5SC500i

No problems with hardware installation with the exception of the cooler. The Noctua Intel backplate will NOT fit as-is because of components on the backside. I replaced the rubber insulators with hard rubber washers of equivalent thickness which allowed the backplate to be mounted. Alternatively you could cut a bit into one of the insulators as it's just one corner that's causing problems.

The board came with BIOS 1.70 and BMC 00.12.00. IPMI worked out of the box. Some weird log events but I'll have to look into that later. Booted FreeNAS from Transcend USB Flash Memory connected to MB header. No problems configuring the system whatsoever. Getting over 100MB/sec writes with CIFS.

The system pulls around 60-70W from UPS during spin-up. Idle with all drives spinning is around 30W and about 50W when writing to all drives.

Can't speak for long-term reliability but the initial experience has been pleasant so far.

Will this be sufficent/anything I've missed?

The HDs! :D (just joking)
If you don't need lot of plex users transcoding at the same time u can think at i3 4130 too to save money! even the seasonic G360 psu is more than ok

When I send an ECC event using "ipmitool event 3", I see the following in the event log (viewable from the board's web interface):

5301/05/2014 00:24:34UnknownMemoryCorrectable ECC - Asserted

I would assume then that an actual ECC error would be reported the same way.
Can you elaborate on that? What is tested here... would such an event be only issued from the board if ECC is working or is it more a test of the error reporting by the application software (FreeNAS)?

ECC errors can only be detected by the hardware. They can also only be reported by the hardware. BUT, the OS should be monitoring and reporting those errors when the hardware reports them.

So.. yes and yes.

Just an FYI for anyone going with these boards - you guys want the Kingston 8GB ECC KVR16E11/8 model, not the 8GB ECC KVR16E11/8l. Some people have posted saying they can't POST on the 226 Asrock with the /8l model.

8GB ECC KVR16E11/8l ......................... as in 8L? I thought we were talking about 8I that was working on ASROCK.

Not sure what you mean, but there are two similar Kingston models of their 8GB ECC sticks - the KVR16E11/8 are supposed to work fine, but I've heard of people having issues with the KVR16E11/8l - people were not able to POST with two DIMMs. So to be safe I recommend the KVR16E11/8 because they are the same price as the /8l and there's no difference in performance (to my knowledge). I'm honestly not sure what the actual difference is between the two models. Haven't been able to turn up anything on Kingston's site.

Mini-ITX build hardware in sig.... humming along nicely.

Will be adding 2 more TB drives in the future and possibly swap out the G3220 for a Xeon.

How do you plan on migrating your data from the pool to the new array when you add the 2 extra drives?

Pretty much manually. Copy everything to an external drive(s), create new 6 disk RAIDZ2 pool, copy everything back.

Ugh what a pain. I wanted to do a similar thing, start with 4 HDDs in RAIDZ2 and add 2 more later, but all that data moving would be such a pain. Hopefully I'll have enough external storage to fit all the stuff in the pool while I upgrade.
