Looking into possible PCI-e sata expansion cards to passthrough to truenas.
Now please consider I live in Uruguay and products are extremely limited and very expensive.

This is only a gen 2 but 8 ports at a good price.

Any thought on this?

  • Marvell 88SE9215 + 88SM9705 chipset
  • 1 -Lane PCI-Express 2.0 interface, up to 6.0Gbps
  • 8 Internal SATA and 4 External eSATA ports
  • Connect up to 8 SATA devices at a time
  • Supports Native Command Queuing (NCQ)
  • Drive Activity Indicator Cable Included
  • Comes with standard and low-profile brackets

mobo = asrock B550M pro-4 with ryzen 3400g.

Thanks

That's a terrible combination...

ok

Read that this would be a more suitable option:

LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card

and a couple of these?

This, in combination with your cable would be a reasonable choice.

Must be flashed into IT mode (some online sellers do that for you), which is easy enough to do once you have the card if it's not in IT mode already.

great thanks - will need to look into that.
Might well order this. There are 2nd hand ones on newegg - are these the kind of items that either work or not? Would never buy a used hdd spinner for example but this is just a controller

If it's an original it should work.

hmm this one say 'origin china' always got to look at the small print.
But are these just the same ones sold by USA suppliers brought in from the same chinese suppliers and marked up?
I don't know

You could just try it and send it back if it smells fishy since it's sold on Amazon.

Not that simple I'm afraid - will be shipped to Miami and then transferred down to Uruguay from a shipping company here who specialise in customs. The online shop here is tiendamia.com
Here we have a quota of 3 imports a year up to 200 USD without import duties.

So sending it back via amazon is virtually impossible.

That sucks, I wouldn't use Amazon then. Try for a trusted eBay seller (ie The Art of Server).

Loads of choice on ebay and cheaper BUT a minefield.

Any recommendations? They all look the same with some different brands on the boards like Fujitsu etco_O

This looks like a possible legit dell card
Maybe so, but have you had a close look at the picture provided...

Looks to me like there's some damage around the connectors.

Given the number of this item sold by the seller I don't think the specific card in the picture is the one that will be shipped.

Probably true, but why select that one for the picture then, not one with no damage and both port covers in place?

No. Port B has a cover. This would be a standard feature on a genuine Dell card. Dell is really hot on selling you stuff you don't need. We had a bunch of R210-ii's come in with HBA's that were apparently built to support a *single* drive. They weren't SAS so don't ask me to explain why this was; I assume Dell was just printing money. They all had covers. Anyways the little cap just pulls straight out and uncovers Port B. The bent connector is, I believe, the activity LED, and it looks like there's a female connector jammed in there real good. My guess is that someone was partsing up a server and couldn't figure out how to remove the cable, and just pulled until the female pins popped out of the female (white) body that you see there. Might also explain the bentness of the connector. IMO? High probability of legit Dell card, but also a warning that the card may have been removed by a Goober With Hammer Everything Looks Like A Nail Even If It Is Tech.

*cough*

You can get a 8 Port Inspur 9211-8i from aliexpress for around 15$ and a inspur 9207-8i for around 18$.

Yes it's probably a counterfeit but they work with original LSI firmware/bios!

I have the Inspur 9211-8i and the LSI 9207-8i and they work flawless for months now in 24/7.

I don't care if it's a counterfeit as long as they work and as example my Intel x540-t2 nics are running for about 3 years now without issues and they are counterfeit with original intel chip under the heatsink.

As example: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/1005005043593061.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.0.0.38541hzq1hzq4D&gps-id=pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.40050.354490.0&scm_id=1007.40050.354490.0&scm-url=1007.40050.354490.0&pvid=b705edf7-e407-4cfe-a3c6-98c1b449c5bf&_t=gps-id:pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.40050.354490.0,pvid:b705edf7-e407-4cfe-a3c6-98c1b449c5bf,tpp_buckets:668#2846#8111#1996&pdp_npi=4@dis!USD!25.46!23.93!!!185.04!!@2103254116968033116821671e65cc!12000031431128215!rec!CH!1791188076!&gatewayAdapt=4itemAdapt

The art of servers on youtube even tested two of these cards. :)

PS: Just slap a fan on it in case you are running it in a NAS or Desktop and you will be fine.
