Dear Experts,
Since several weeks I have recurring error in the log:
Device: /dev/ada3, Read SMART Self-Test Log Failed
no other errors or issues existed. Since yesterday the following error has occured as well:
Device: /dev/ada3, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate
the console shows

Any suggestions what can be wrong? Or should I already replace the drive?
Thanks in advance for help!

Short update: following some other users having similar problem, I've replaced a sata cable. Issue still persists, the same errors in the console as above.

You might have a cabling problem... CRC errors indicate connectivity or the controller (port).

Consider using a different SATA port and see if it persists.

The SMART data indicates that the disk should be OK (a couple of doubts about one block, but that seems to have recovered somehow).

Luckily I have one port free, after switching the disk to it the errors are not showing up anymore. But looking at other disks the attribute 199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count is also in high numbers (ada0: 187601 and ada2: 2407) but 0 one 4th disk.
But now I can see similar errors on ada0:
Code:
Nov 13 13:20:45 homeserwer (ada0:ata2:0:0:0): READ_DMA48. ACB: 25 00 60 29 58 40 be 01 00 00 58 00
Nov 13 13:20:45 homeserwer (ada0:ata2:0:0:0): CAM status: ATA Status Error
Nov 13 13:20:45 homeserwer (ada0:ata2:0:0:0): ATA status: 51 (DRDY SERV ERR), error: 84 (ICRC ABRT )
Nov 13 13:20:45 homeserwer (ada0:ata2:0:0:0): RES: 51 84 60 29 58 be be 01 00 58 00
Nov 13 13:20:45 homeserwer (ada0:ata2:0:0:0): Retrying command, 3 more tries remain

Would that suggest a controller failure or just bad quality controller? If failure I would need to replace motherboard (and probably more as this is an old system).

Maybe both... there are certainly indicators pointing you in the direction of a board replacement, so it is perhaps time to follow them.

Let's see. For now I'll try to extend its life with new sata controller. In the meantime, I will plan upgrade. In my case I use old hardware from PC to build the NAS maybe this time I'll do it the other way round. Hopefully achieving much lower power consumption. Is there a good guide for good enough low energy hardware? Ideally in mATX form factor with 5-6 sata ports.

Solved: I have installed a PCI SATA adapter (PCE8SAT-M01 based on Marvell 88SE9215 chip) and connected all hard drives to it. No more CRC errors and now the drives work at full SATA 3 speed. So no need for full system upgrade (yet).

Caution... Marvell SATA controllers are known by some folks in this forum to not work very well in the long term, so even though it may seem like this is all done, you're much better considering a (relatively cheap from e-bay or whatever) LSI HBA card instead.

Thanks, I should have read a bit more before purchasing the controller. Indeed, it would not be much more expensive. Anyway, I'll be watching it hoping it will survive couple more years and then I'll probably replace the whole system for something low power.
