EPYC+Supermicro stuck in TrueNAS core install loop

EPYC Naples + supermicro H11SSL which was previously deployed with a scale install. Due to underwhelming performance and long load times, I am attempting to install Core. However It seems i get stuck either in a mpr0: Out of chain frames or CAM: no root error. Reading through the forums it seems most suggestions are this related to an issue with my HBA. I am just confused as I was able to use Scale previously. Just trying to isolate how I can definitely narrow the issue. If the issue is my HBA, then I would have to RMA my motherboard as its built in, which sucks.

There are some HBAs that have problems with their queues in certain versions of TrueNAS. Can you try reinstalling your previous SCALE version in a different boot drive and see if it imports?

been trying all weekend to get back to scale, but its stuck in a boot loop as well. I think I am at a point where I either take an SSD and install truenas via another computer and then reattach it to my server or face the fact that maybe Truenas doesnt work well with the built in HBA.

Supermicro CSE-936 Chassis w/ SAS2 backplane
EPYC 7281+ Supermicro H11SSL MObo
80 gb of RAM
14 hddrives in 3 vdev pool.
14 NVMEs in 7vdev pool
boot pool = two crucial SSDs connected to backplane
previous scale install SSDs were daisy changed off of an M.2 port which I coverted to 5 SaTA ports. Neither SSD config works for Scale/Core now.

What are you using for that conversion? That could be the issue.

Must be a port multiplier: Not good!

aahhh makes sense. as the SSD i connected to the backplane are connected via a QNAP SATA (QDA-A2MAR) port multiplier as well. Thanks for the hints all. Will try to reorganize my hard drive set up so i can free up a drive sled for one SSD per backplane slot.

I just want to say thank you all for the direction again. Although I hate the fact i lost the extra storage drives I had hanging off the adaptors, I am happy to get truenas core deployed.

Good hardware is key to a happy system. If you need more ports for drives, get a SAS HBA (LSI 9200/9300).

Another lesson is to always give a complete description of your system and setup for troubleshooting. I wouldn't have guessed that a high-end server-grade EPYC system was paired with crappy, gamer-grade, SATA port multipliers!

Maybe this should be another post but when i imported my Scale pool to core, I am running into a permission issue. I believe its because under SMB i cant map an admin group. Not familiar with this error
