Hi everyone,
I am running TrueNAS virtualized on Proxmox and yesterday morning I was greeted with the error message:

Code:
Pool data-pool state is DEGRADED: One or more devices are faulted in response to persistent errors. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.
The following devices are not healthy:
Disk ATA ST4000VN008-2DR1 ZM417ZGZ is FAULTED

I have ran smartctl long overnight and this is the result:

Code:
root@truenas[~]# smartctl -a /dev/da2
smartctl 7.2 2021-09-14 r5236 [FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE-p7 amd64] (local build)

I am also running scrutiny in my homelab and this is the "export".

Few questions on next steps:
  • Based on what I read in the forum, I assume the drive is done. Is that a correct assumption?
  • I am running this drive in a mirror with an identical drive. Can I still use the other drive to save data?
  • This drive is a 4TB drive. Can I combine a 3TB with it in a mirror? I am currently using 900GB of that mirror, but all the data is on the 4TB drive.
Thanks so much. This is the first time, that a drive is failing on me.

I have changed the cables as proposed also on reddit and rebooted the server. Now it shows the following error messages and the pool is unhealthy.

Code:

What should I do now? The smartlctl from scrutiny still has the original disk failing and the other one fine.

replace da2 with a 4TB drive. Also da0 isn't looking healthy either with 72 offline uncorrectables either.

Can it be that the error reporting got confused just because I changed the cables around? I have both on an HBA that I passthrough from proxmox to Truenas. Because yesterday those 72 errors were attributed to the faulty drive

Yes - quite possibly. as "da'n'" is subject to being changed every time you reboot.
Can you repost smartctl -a /dev/..... on both drives just to confirm. You don't need to run a short or long test

Sure, here we go:

da0 is failing a long test - definately faulty. Also IMO a bit warm at 40 degrees (max 43)
Nothing I can see wrong with da2 (but hopefully others that understand more will look as well)

What I don't see is the uncorrectables?????

Seagate agreed to send me a replacement disk but it will take a week or two. I just removed the disk from the server and rebooted. The pool is in degraded state. Do I just wait for the new disk to show up or do I need to detach or remove the faulty disk from the pool?

Detach the disk - as its a mirror you can (should be able to) remove disks from the data vdevs. Then you, when the new disk arrives, EXTEND the existing vdev. If you are in the vdev definition screen (add vdev) - you are in the wrong place and are heading for a disaster (where you end up with striped pool - not what you want)

Its wierd wording - but it is what it is.

You do have a backup don't you?

So just detach the “unavailable“ disk in the pool status screen?
Seems also the place to extend the vdev later.

Yes, I have three backups in total, one in the cloud

I think so - yes. It presumably can't do any harm

@NugentS You are 100% correct. Drive ZM417ZGZ is faulty and has a Long test failure, plus it had the pending sector errors present until the power to the drive was cycled, but I know they will come back. Drive ZGY68GJH looks to be in good condition for now.

@thimplicity If you have important information/data on that drive, I'd back it up while it's still working. It's very easy to have the last drive fail and then all your data is gone, or you do something wrong while removing the old drive or installing the new drive. When you replace the drive, make sure to check your SMART Test setup to ensure all your drives are listed to be tested. I have personally seen my drive removed from SMART testing after replacing a failed drive but that was a few versions of TrueNAS back. Just something to look at.

Seagate agreed to send me a replacement disk but it will take a week or two.
Is it under RMA? I ask because it looks like your drive is over 3 years of age and I believe this model has a 3 year warranty. I didn't look up the serial number but I have seen where the warranty will be marked for a little over 3 years to make up for time waiting to be sold. If it is RMA, you got lucky I think, nothing wrong with that.

I have chatted with Seagate and told them that the drive is literally 2 weeks out of warranty. Also Amazon states incorrect 5-year warranty on the website (because they have ironwolf and ironwolf pro drives on the same page. So thy are making an exception. I understood it in a way that I receive a factory repaired drive after I sent mine in.

It is great that I get the drive exchanged, but I would have loved to move to NVMe drives :D.

@NugentS I followed your steps and detached the unavailable drive - thanks for helping me through the steps.

This is normal for all RMA's. Even if you purchased your drive yesterday new, if you RMA it, you are apt to get a refurbished drive, however the warranty for the drive will last until your original warranty expires. In your case, the warranty had expired so unless the bump the warranty up to 5 years, the drive you get will technically be expired. I'm glad you were able to find someone who would help you out.

I'm still researching that avenue. I'm finding it will not be a simple upgrade, not unless I want to buy all new hardware, which I do not. I'm sure there is an add-on card that will work with my system, if not, I am pricing out a new system just in case I get the itch.

My CPU has 40 PCIe lanes, so I would have enough lanes. I did not do a great job paying attention to how my motherboard manages the PCIe slots, but it is what it is at this point. I have "space" for 6 NVMe drives if I want to run the server with a 10GBe card, which makes sense, otherwise you do not need NVMe in the first place if you use it for storage.

Passthrough to TrueNAS is probably another story, as there is no controller you can passthrough, if you use PCIe bifurcation cards.

If I am not wrong, you can just passthrough the NVMe drives. But I do not virtualize, do not trust my word on this.

ESXi version 8 supports this, earlier versions do not. Since I'm running 7.0.3, I would need to update as well should I go down this path, but my 16 PCIe lanes will not cut it so I am looking at new CPU's and motherboards, and RAM too. Geez. Of course if I can fine an add-on card that will support four M.2 cards over an x8 slot, I can do that with the slots I have. I started to fall asleep looking for an add-on card so I took a break and ate lunch. Time to head to the store and pick up Pizza soon.

When I purchased my system back in January 2016, this was not something on my mind at all. Normal HDD and SSD were already expensive. But now it's a thought so looking I will do, but I am partial to Supermicro, really like the IPMI.

I believe you cannot do that with bifurcation cards. Maybe with PLX cards - see here.

I found a link yesterday that said it could be done using ESXi 8, however I am unable to find that link today, of course. However a PLX type card would probably save me the headache to shove four 4TB M.2 cards into it. I'd need to purchase a seperate two card adapter as well to pass through two more drives to get me up to six 4TB drives (that is what I'm looking at right now). But I have time to do research before I pull out my credit card. I may end up with a new computer

EDIT: Found the link. Read post #1 where the member has an issue, post #2 fixes it. At least it sounds like it will work.
