Hi guys
I am looking to build a new personal/family NAS for file storage, plex with HD homerun, VM host, mail server and possibly various other services.
There will at most be 3 plex connections at any time.
I have not build a computer since the late 90's. My current NAS is a Synology, so I hope you guys will help me out. Assume that I am a newbe.
Does the following system look like it will freeNAS, and are there any obvious mistakes/additional things i need to buy?
CPU
1 x Intel Xeon E3-1225V5 - 3.3 GHz - 4 cores
http://ark.intel.com/products/88168/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1225-v5-8M-Cache-3_30-GHz
Harddrives (This will give me 4TB of useable space with RAIDz2 right?)
6 x 1 TB WD Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 3.5"
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236342
PSU (Is 650W overkill?)
1 x Corsair RMx Series RM650x 80 PLUS Gold
http://www.corsair.com/en/rmx-series-rm650x-650-watt-80-plus-gold-certified-fully-modular-psu
Cooler (Good enough?)
1 x Cryorig H5 Ultimate
http://www.cryorig.com/h5-ultimate.php
Motherboard
1 x ASUS P10S WS - ATX
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P10S-WS/
SSD/Os drive
1 x Kingston SSDNow UV400 120 GB 2.5"
https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/consumer/suv400s3
Memory (Buffered memory is OK right?)
2 x Kingston - DDR4 - 16 GB - DIMM 288-PIN - 2133 MHz - buffered - ECC - KTH-PL421E/16G
https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Kingston-DDR4-16-GB-DIMM-288-pin/3521924.aspx
Case (Is the included cooling OK?)
1 x Fractal Design Define R5 Blackout Edition - ATX
http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/define-series/define-r5-blackout-edition
Additional questions:
I plan on moving my current Synology NAS to a remote location for encrypted backup. Is this easy enough to set up through VPN?
Is running a personal mail server really as hard to set up and as vulnerable as people say?
I have had my hotmail for 15+ years, but due to a creeping NSA/spying "paranoia" I would like to move my and my families mails to my own server.
I will probably come back with more questions, as they arrise.
Thanks in advance!
