Hi guys

I am looking to build a new personal/family NAS for file storage, plex with HD homerun, VM host, mail server and possibly various other services.
There will at most be 3 plex connections at any time.

I have not build a computer since the late 90's. My current NAS is a Synology, so I hope you guys will help me out. Assume that I am a newbe.

Does the following system look like it will freeNAS, and are there any obvious mistakes/additional things i need to buy?

CPU
1 x Intel Xeon E3-1225V5 - 3.3 GHz - 4 cores
http://ark.intel.com/products/88168/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1225-v5-8M-Cache-3_30-GHz

Harddrives (This will give me 4TB of useable space with RAIDz2 right?)
6 x 1 TB WD Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 3.5"
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236342

PSU (Is 650W overkill?)
1 x Corsair RMx Series RM650x 80 PLUS Gold
http://www.corsair.com/en/rmx-series-rm650x-650-watt-80-plus-gold-certified-fully-modular-psu

Cooler (Good enough?)
1 x Cryorig H5 Ultimate
http://www.cryorig.com/h5-ultimate.php

Motherboard
1 x ASUS P10S WS - ATX
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P10S-WS/

SSD/Os drive
1 x Kingston SSDNow UV400 120 GB 2.5"
https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/consumer/suv400s3

Memory (Buffered memory is OK right?)
2 x Kingston - DDR4 - 16 GB - DIMM 288-PIN - 2133 MHz - buffered - ECC - KTH-PL421E/16G
https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Kingston-DDR4-16-GB-DIMM-288-pin/3521924.aspx

Case (Is the included cooling OK?)
1 x Fractal Design Define R5 Blackout Edition - ATX
http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/define-series/define-r5-blackout-edition

Additional questions:

I plan on moving my current Synology NAS to a remote location for encrypted backup. Is this easy enough to set up through VPN?

Is running a personal mail server really as hard to set up and as vulnerable as people say?
I have had my hotmail for 15+ years, but due to a creeping NSA/spying "paranoia" I would like to move my and my families mails to my own server.

I will probably come back with more questions, as they arrise.

Thanks in advance!

3.6 TB

Listed item is Retail Box so it comes with a heatsink and fan.

No need for this.

Can't speak to this except I think I'd rather use a trusted Supermicro motherboard for a similar price.

SSD/Os drive
1 x Kingston SSDNow UV400 120 GB 2.5"
https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/consumer/suv400s3
If this is your boot drive, it doesn't really matter what you get. Any SSD at least 16GB in size will do nicely. Larger drives are wasted space so use cost as your criteria here.

Ensure your RAM is listed on the approved vendors list.

Not overkill but you could drop down to a 450 Watt if you wanted to. If you ever plan to upgrade to adding more hard drives then this gives you the option.

I have no idea.

What? This has nothing to do with FreeNAS, sorry bud.

Realize that hotmail is nice and free. If the NSA and other hackers want your email then they will get it. I'd worry more about stuff like ransomware or malware. At least when using the web browser version of Hotmail you are fairly protected from it. Also if you run your own email server then you will need a domain name and a DNS. Next you need to maintain your mail server powered up all the time, no temporary outages, no reboots, it must be available all the time. I ran my own mail server for a few weeks and realized it was not worth the effort. It was a learning experience. Stick with Hotmail, your family will not yell at you then. If you want to give it a shot, don't move your family to it until you have let it run for several months and you are happy with it.

The problem with running your own mail server is that you need to deal with spam.

Re the E3 1225, I assume the 5 is integrated graphics, which'd be a waste if you have motherboard graphics. Which you might get if you get a board with IPMI.

I'd consider at least 2TB drives personally. If you're planning to be at capacity then you're planning wrong.

Buffered or unbuffered depends on your motherboard. Buy it from crucial.com after entering your mobo details and you can't go wrong

Not sure if you need 32GB, a single 16GB would probably suffice.

Define r5 gets good reviews.

Further to the 1TB. I wouldn't be surprised if 2x4TB was the same price. And gets you the same storage. Less power. Easy to expand in the future.

You'd be better served getting the e3-1220v5 as it does not have integrated graphics so less dollars than the CPU you have chosen. Same processing power and most server grade motherboards have an Aspeed or similar graphics chip already.

I'm making an assumption the OP already has the hard drives listed, not purchasing them new.

3x 2TB WD Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX
https://www.wdc.com/en-ie/products/internal-storage/wd-red.html#WD20EFRX

PSU (No change)
1 x Corsair RMx Series RM650x 80 PLUS Gold
http://www.corsair.com/en/rmx-series-rm650x-650-watt-80-plus-gold-certified-fully-modular-psu

Case (No change)
Fractal Design Define R5 Blackout Edition - ATX
http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/define-series/define-r5-blackout-edition

Please check it out and let me know if it looks good.

Changed motherboard to Supermicro as suggested.
Changed CPU to E3-1220V5 as motherboard has integrated graphics, as suggested.
Changed memory from 2x16GB Kingston to 2x8GB Crusial using crucials compatibility tool, as suggested.
Changed harddrives from 6x1TB to 3x2TB WD Reds, and am going to be using RAIDz1 instead of RAIDz2 as I also plan to use off site backup.

Thanks in advance!
