looking in the GUI console I saw a message about
unable to gpt format disk ada4

a forum search gave a hint that it was prevented as there was some residual volume left from a prior ZFS pool. and this seemed possible as I have been messing around with volumes on these disks.
I tried to mount it, automount it, no luck. gmirror status revealed I was right there was leftovers from a previous ZFS volume on that disk.

Not having much command line BSD experience, I tried the wipe command from view disks area in the freeNAS GUI. That didn't help, so I then tried under windows, diskpart - clean, that didn't help either.
I decided to try a linux disk wiping tool (DBAN) and then wiped the first 1% of all the disks (at the same time) praying that this residual data was in the first 1% of the disk so I would not have to wait the days to wipe 100% of the disk.

It worked!

moral of the story, if you have empty disks, and can't get your volume created, make sure they are actually blank first!

That was good work figuring this out on your own!
