Hi. I am on the latest Core. I dont have alot (actually any) critical data on my nas, and I would like to try Scale.

My NAS enclosure is a @#$! to deal with and I would rather not open it to get to my usb key which is hidden inside it and I dont have another one handy at the momen.

Is there a way to update to Scale from Core simply with GUI or command line tools ?

No. Two completely different OSes

Okay. A bit of a noob here.

So I've been looking for specific instructions on how to go from one to the other, and apparently is not as easy as just install and go. Something about exporting and importing volumes?

Can someone explain the procedure step by step?

I mainly want to preserve the zfs filesystem, I dont care about any VMs, jails, plugins.

I have plex, but I can reinstall it and I can recreate the whole library from the content afterwards.

Not yet.

That's not completely true, easy "upgrade" migration (besides plugins, jails and VM's) is confirmed to be available at release.

If you need specific instructions or step-by-step for those actions, maybe an OS that is in ALPHA isn't the best option for you?

Talking from a tester-developer standpoint here: I still plan on some breaking changes on TrueCharts before release and I can not guarantee there will be a migration path. Because thats what testing is for. I already fear for too many users that expect migration guides during an Alpha/Beta for getting into it or every breaking change >.<

In that case you can just install SCALE and import the pool. :D

I don't get it. On the release plan... https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/truenas-scale-21-02-is-delivered.91127/

It says ZFS is ready for prime time (aka: "Release"). Apart from this, I mainly want to play with some dockers. Plus, I have a backup of all that data.... somewhere... I think. :)

At tis point there will perhaps be a docker for nextcloud, one for a minecraft server, plex probably...

In any case, why should I be worried about "breaking changes to truecharts" ? What does this imply for my use case?

Call me impatient and enthusiastic :)

And thank you for not wanting me how to shoot myself in the foot, but its having the net effect of increasing the chances that the hole in my shoe will be bigger as I attempt to do this by fumbling around.

anyway.

I have a supermicro A2SDi-8C+-HLN4F and 8x seagate ironwolf drives 4TB if the concern is one of hardware and compatibility.

I'm going to take the gun away slowly... just take a few breaths and enjoy trueNAS CORE a little longer.

More seriously, if its a fresh build, its OK. Very few hardware issues. The challenges with migration are making sore all the sharing protocols are compatible and that their metadata layouts are similar. For example, Linux doesn't natively support extended attributes.
