Hello!

Last night I tried to update my Freenas box from 11.1-U6 to the newest possible update, but something went badly wrong.

I tried to make the update from the web gui. It started downloading and installing it, but after awhile playing games in other room I come back to see message that system is rebooting. Seemed like a normal message to me, but nope. I had my Freenas running, but the monitor that was connected to it wasnt on. Turned on and got this message of grub.

GRUB loading...
Welcome to GRUB!

error: file 'normal.mod' not found.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>

What can I do? Fresh install of freenas or is there something to be done?

It looks like the boot device died. Try reinstalling U6 on a fresh stick and restoring your config.

Thank you for your reply. I managed to fix everything with a simple update, all of my configs and stuff got restored. One thing I need to mention tho, if someone ends up in this thread... please read below.

Making bootable USB-Stick with Rufus and Freenas installation .ISO made my both computers (desktop and laptop) to bluescreen, right after the Rufus write the iso file to my USB-Stick.

The way I got the iso file on my stick was to use win32diskimager.

I hope this helps someone else.

And thank you Dlavigne once again for help!
