Hi guys,

i just upgraded to 9.3, but the booting process was freezing. Than i tried a fresh install of 9.3 and i get the same problem. Both times the boot will halt.

I've included a picture of the IPMI Console (this a picture from the verbose boot mode). What can i do?
I'm a little bit worried about my data, even if this is "only" the system usb drive...

Any suggestions?

Thank you...

I'll join your thread, as we banged our heads to wall in IRC just while ago. There were also jbeez who run into problems with upgrade.

I had a bit different route... I was coming from 9.2.1.4 with gui upgrade to 9.3. It did it's tricks, and rebooted. Somehow my usb stick partition was messed up, or smth, it stated: "trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/md0[]...". The old memstick size was 4 gigs, if it makes a difference.

After some reboots it was clear it won't boot, so I did a fresh install. After the first boot to new setup on 9.3, I did restore the old database. The device booted again. This time the boot got stuck to upgrading database schema. The kernel was not stuck, as it still printed out some interface UP message line. That upgrade never finished, I had to ctrl-alt-del reboot, semi clean.

The next boot spit out so many errors, that I didn't expect it to work sanely. However the gui is up, and something like the zfs volumes show up correctly, my ssh works and so on. But all the shares are gone. There is this file: /data/update.failed, which complains about some apple shares structure in database, which I didn't even use. But I think that's the schema update gone wrong. I'll attach the file, if it helps the developers.

I didn't create a bug report, as this install was really messy, and likely not re-produceable anywhere else. I will now downgrade to 9.2.1.9 and try to restore the db.

BTW: I'll save /var/log, if there is anyone interested to figure out why the database schema didn't upgrade.

BR,

ikke

Hi ikke,
thanks for your answer but i think that does not help me.

Im not able to boot in the gui under 9.3. Not with a fresh install and not with the upgrade. I think its a problem with my usb drive, but i dont know how to fix this! ;(

damned, now after installing 9.2.1.9 from usb stick, I end up also on similar state, a bit earlier than yours. I'm looking at row "mountroot>". Somehow it doesn't recognize the USB root device.

Same problem here. Upgraded vrom 9.2.1.8 to 9.3 via the GUI.
Server didn't boot: USB stick did not boot after BIOS (HP ML310 server).
Returned to fress 9.1.2.9 install => got mountroot> issue.
Now returning to 9.2.1.8 (fresh install). Damn...

I confirm: fresh install 9.2.1.8 boots.
Same procedure fresh install 9.3 doesn't.

Forgot to mention: I did a successfull upgrade on a Dell machine earlier today. It does not work on my HP ML310 server...

I'm having a doubt that the 9.2.x partition issue might come from the BIOS setting, I used to override the boot prio 1 device while toggling the sticks. It could be that bios is faking the device order, but freebsd kernel sees them differently. I'll still try once to boot with the original stick, and dumping 9.2.1.9 on it from xz. And setting it as a prio 1 bios boot device.

It won't explain the original problem of mine with 9.3 though.

Now the 9.2.1.9 booted, and did database conversion ok. Let's see tomorrow if that database can be run on 9.3.

For the original problem, I'm sorry I hijacked your thread, as this doesn't seem to be the same case after all. Yours sounds a bit like usb stick incompatibility. Or perhaps you should check your bios boot order settings too?

Ugh.... I did an upgrade, and on the last reboot now the machine hangs at BIOS before even getting to memory check.

Remove the USB key, and machine works as it should (but doesn't boot FreeNAS obviously).

I put the ISO on a new 4gb key and booted the machine off it, then installed the old 8gb key to try and do install onto it. Now I get this:

gpart: geom 'da0' Operation not permitted
dd: /dev/da0: Operation not permitted
The FreeNAS installation on da0 has failed

Geez.... ran out and bought a new 8gb to try and install to, and now it's hanging (5 minutes so far) at a few steps into the install

Still same issue here (struggling to get the 9.3 booting on my HP Proliant ML310 G4):
I did the last firmware upgrade on the server. It did not help.
I'm able to boot the Freenas on my laptop. So no USB stick issue.
I have no issue booting from another stick using Freenas 9.2.1.8.

It seems like the BIOS doesn't find/see the boot partition?

I can press the F9. Server says F9 pressed but does not enter the BIOS...

How can I debug this?
Is the new ZFS filesystem of the boot device the problem?

I gave up on 9.3 for now. Went back to 9.2.1.9 and it works properly.

Idem... same problem on a usb stick ever used with 9.2.1.9... upgrading to 9.3 failed... fresh install un usb stick (tried with 2 different kind of sandisk 16gb - micro an cruzer) and after all the bios do nothing... only a blink on the upper left of the screen... my machine is a HP Ml350G4p recycled as a NAS...

About the same problem here, too. Using system that has run FreeNAS for 2 years. Now, Board hangs at the first screen flashed by the BIOS if any USB drive is attached. I have tried it with three different USB drives and tried changing a number of settings in the BIOS regarding the boot order and boot devices, tried changing which slots the USB drives were plugged into. I can flash the USB drives by: attaching a CD burner via USB cable, booting to the FreeNAS installation screen, then plugging in the USB drive and installing FreeNAS onto it. Plugging the USB drive in any earlier in the process make the board hang instantly, no matter where it is.

Anybody have some ideas? It seems more like a hardware compatibility issue but I don't understand why it didn't happen before now because I am using all the same hardware, all the same USB slots.

I have an idea but you may not like it... If you have a spare SATA port, install either a cheap SSD or hard drive (laptop hard drive will do nicely). For compatibility reasons it's best to move that drive to the SATA0 (first bootable drive) connector.

Actually I'd like someone to try this to see if it solves this problem. It's not the ideal solution, especially if yo do not have any available SATA connectors.
