Hi. Can the community sanity check my approach to a possible failing disk? Details below....

I got a couple of alerts this morning on my SOHO TrueNAS
  • Device: /dev/ada0, 8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors. 2022-03-17 08:32:51 (Europe/London)
  • Device: /dev/ada0, 8 Offline uncorrectable sectors. 2022-03-17 08:32:52 (Europe/London)
ada0 forms part of a 4 disk RAIDZ2 pool so I do have resiliancy to fall back on, but I should not ignore this alert. I gathered some further information using smartctl

Code:
root@freenas:~ # smartctl -x /dev/ada0
smartctl 7.2 2020-12-30 r5155 [FreeBSD 12.2-RELEASE-p12 amd64] (local build)

The reallocated sector count shows a raw value of 32. Hmmmm. Is this significant?

SMART tests appear to be running. For this disk the short tests run every 8 hours Mon-Thu and the extended test on Friday morning. (Tomorrow). My guess is the last short SMART test which ran at 8AM(ish) picked up the error. The next short test is at 4PM and the next extended long test is tonight at midnight. The disk appears to be well in guarantee (until May 2023)

It is my opinion that 8 failed sectors is worrying and close to the "this is unacceptable" cutoff, but as the drive is still working I'm inclined to see what happens when the next short / long SMART tests complete.

I am steeling myself for the expense of replacement but holding off clicking "buy now" until I have more information. Does anybody know how many sectors need to be unreadable before Seagate will replace a drive under guarantee?

Is there anything else I should be doing. Have I done anything wrong so far? Is my approach sensible/sane or foolhardy/risky.

My thanks in advance for all responses.

With those values, the drive will probably be kicked out of the pool soon, so if you would rather not be left with a pool in a degraded state at a time of ZFS's choosing, then do the replacement now.

I don't know the details of seagate's warranty, but it would certainly be worth approaching them with that smartctl output to see if they agree to do something.

Very much: There are already 32 sectors that are definitely parked out of use, and 8 suspicious sectors which will eventually join this list.
This disk is not healthy and it's getting worse. Replace a soon as possible!

I have no experience with Seagate, but any non-zero value under #5, #197 or #198 should be a valid ground for claiming warranty.

My thanks for your prompt replies. These wise words are very much appreciated.

I've now accepted the hit and now clicked "buy now" on a new drive. I'm going for double the capacity of the old drive with a view to upgrading the other disks in the pool at some point in the future to expand the pool size. (I'm currently at 67% capacity)

I shall also be attempting to return the dying drive under warranty. The replacement can function as a cold spare or backup I guess.

I'll post updates on the upcoming anticipated SMART checks / resilver / scrubs / returns-to-Seagate to assist others who follow......

Lets do some analysis. First of all the (5,197,198) entries have not increased so no new bad sectors have been found

This next section tells us the LBA of the first error and how long the extended test had to run when it encountered it.

Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error # 1 Extended offline Completed: read failure 10% 17682 7760267536 # 2 Short offline Completed without error 00% 17665 -

The drive has a reported capacity of 7814037168 logical blocks (4000787030016 bytes reported total divided by 512 bytes reported logical block size). This means the fault is right at the "end" of the disk (99.31% scanned OK before getting the error). I'm inclined to draw a vague conclusion that the end of the disk is where tolerances are most critical as this is where the disk is spinning the fastest under the heads. (Happy to be corrected if this is not the case)

Either way the initial sage advice of "dont delay - get a new disk in sharpish" still holds and I am gratified to receive an email informing me that a brand new Seagate Ironwolf Pro 8TB will be arriving on Monday.

More updates on drive removal / replacement / resilver / scrub will follow in due course to assist and inform those that follow.

That's definitely grounds for replacing the drive.
I echo this.... I have found that if it fails it's own test and it's in warranty getting an RMA is no problem.

From what I can see the drive should have a 3 Year warranty, so if the Power On Hours is within a couple of months of when you bought the drive you should have warranty.

So, if you are still in warranty, just go to the seagate web site and file your RMA request.

You might want to consider putting in another drive till your RMA comes back.... depending on circumstances you are likely looking at 3 weeks + which is a long time for the pool to run with reduced redundancy.

An update.

New purchased drive arrived on Sat so ....
  • I offlined the failing, but still working drive (Storage, Pools, Cogwheel, Status, ThreeDots, Offline) and then removed it.
  • I inserted the new drive and waited for it to be recognised - It didn't show up. Hmmmmm.
  • Rebooted the machine and went into the BIOS - Still not showing up. Double Hmmmm!
  • Reseated the new drive, but no matter what I tried it didn't show up. Realised I had a "DeadOnArrival" so said a few bad words and put the failing drive back in as an interim. Checked it showed up OK and brought it back online. Pool was healthy.
  • I then spent some quality time on hold with the vendor to get the DoA replaced.

Second replacement arrived Monday and this time all went well.
  • Offlined the old failing drive, pulled it and and inserted the new one. It showed up almost instantly (within about 30 secs)
  • Initiated the replace process (Storage, Pools, Cogwheel, Status, ThreeDots, Replace, choose new drive)
  • The resilver kicked off automagically and completed with no errors in about 8 hours. Pool is healthy.

Quick Tip for Extra credit : When replacing a drive, any SMART tasks for the old drive need to be edited so that they include the new drive going forward. If you dont do this, the new drive will not have regular SMART tests run on it (Risk!) . There are NO warnings or reminders about this as far as I can see, either in the GUI or in the documentation. (Possible amendment needed? Your comments would be welcomed)

I believe if you've checked "all drives", to include all drives in scheduled SMART tests, one shouldn't worry about it.

You're right of course. Putting "All disks" in the SMART test should address this issue,

but......

I get twitchy about running tests concurrently across all disks on a working pool - especially the extended test which runs a full surface scan. For this purpose I had scheduled the SMART tests to run at separate times and had fallen foul them not running on replaced disks in the past
