Is there any advantage to using FreeNAS for those already familiar with FreeBSD?

I have a file server at home running Samba (only 3rd party daemon it's running). I'm comfortable editing conf files via nano/vi.

if I need more (NZBget or transmission and etc), I can easily install them via ports or pkg.

Thanks for the replies :)

ps. copied FreeNAS installer into a USB stick. I'll give it a go later today.

It saves you the tedium of setting *everything* up your self. Since you're familiar with FreeBSD, you shouldn't have a problem performing advanced things with FreeNAS, but the simple things will be done for you with a simple/capable gui.

And its appliance based... ie the config/os resides on the USB.

And security updates, etc, get delivered/notified via the FreeNAS update channels... which work quite well.

And iX systems do find/fix issues that affect FreeNAS (ie MFC) that aren't necessarily fixed/merged in the base OS.

I've written config scripts so everything is to liking.

My setup also uses a USB stick for OS. Data is on a ZFS pool.
