So I just purchased four HGST 6TB drives P/N: 0F26900 and all manufactured in AUG 2017, all with the same firmware 7JHN, basically all the numbers are identical except the serial numbers of course.

Here is the discrepancy which catches my eye, the time it takes to complete a SMART Extended Test:
S/N: XXXXXLBD = Firmware says 825 minutes (Actual test time < 14 hours)
S/N: XXXXXWLD = Firmware says 825 minutes (Actual test time < 14 hours)
S/N: XXXXX848 = Firmware says 780 minutes (Actual test time < 13 hours)
S/N: XXXXXW4D = Firmware says 976 minutes (Actual test time < 16 hours)

So why the large discrepancy?

I just find it odd that there are some extremes here knowing that all the drives are the same model. Are we looking at a rotational speed issue? Head actuator speed issue? The thing is, all of my previous hard drives always had the same test times, this is the first time I’ve ever seen this kind of discrepancy.

I am presently running badblocks on these drives and after that I plan to find some test which can check the rotational speed of the drive and throughput and hopefully the actuator speed (any recommendations are appreciated). I want to test the last two drives listed and just see if there is somethig I can detect as different, unless a real answer is found by then.

In my mind I am now telling myself "I knew I should have stuck with my trusty WD Reds." Well maybe these will last 5 years as well.

Conveyance testing is not supported by these drives. But the SMART Short and Long tests passed fine, it just bugs me that the long tests have such a wide margin between the drives. I would have expected all the test times to be identical, at least in the firmware listing. I should have provided a full SMART output so I'll include it here.

My understanding is that those estimates are extremely rough and obtained via voodoo more than actual science.

I plan to run diskinfo -ct /dev/adaX which will tell me all the drive physical speeds and then I will compare them all. Maybe that will show the descrepancy. But I have a bit longer for badblocks to run, since I only started the testing about 11 hours and 20 minutes ago.

My HGST drives do show some difference between each of them but not that large.

I have 4TB drives so the time will be a little different but mine show:

560
573 -- drive that is a refurb due to RMA
561
560
548
582
562

I can imagine that even though the drives are all 7200RPM there will be some differences of say 5% so where say one drive is spinning at closer to say 7550 and another is spinning around 6850. It seems like a rather large gap but both drives would be just within a 5% tolerance which in the speed part of things is probably within an acceptable margin.

Yup, I think a 3 hour difference between 2 drives in the same model lineup is a bit extreme. I'm 64% into the badblocks 0x55 writing testing patterns so I've got a few more hours to test :) before I can check on the drive specs. Just wish I could find a test to determine rotational latency. We use to have these in the old days, not I can't seem to find one. I'll just have to compare transfer rates I guess for now. Now to do more searching for info on HGST drives, what fun!

Yup, I think a 3 hour difference between 2 drives in the same model lineup is a bit extreme.

It's very extreme, they are usually very close together performance wise, see example below, results are from a linux script, and although the disks are all 4TB WD Blues they have differences, the newer WD40EZRZ-00GXCB0 are noticeably faster, I suspect they use short stroked 1.2TB platters, the same platters used on the 6TB models, the older slower models use 1TB platters, but you can see that both groups are very close together, maybe a talented user can make a similar FreeNAS script :)

So yesterday I finished up with all of the burn-in testing and even some quick benchmarks.

First, the burn-in testing went flawlessly. Here are the testing times:
SMART Long Test = Variable from 13 hours to 16 hours for the four drives. I still do not know why the large margin but the drive firmware does tell you how long to wait to check for a completion and it was not far off.

Badblocks = 75 to 75.5 hours. Believe it or not, the drive with the shortest SMART Long test time was the last one to finish badblocks. Again, I have no clue why.

And of course I ran a SMART Long test at the end to complete everything.

I also ran some benchmark tests and the results are provided below for your viewing pleasure:

Conclusion: Well the drives all tested fine and without a single failure. I'm still sckeptical on why there are descrepancies in test duration between these drives and what defines this. They are 7200 RPM drives so I do expect them to run a little hotter than my WD Reds and soon I will mount these HGST drives in a case and see just how warm they do get. With an open case and about the same airflow across all of them the HGST drives are 3 to 4C warmer. I'm sure I can keep them below 40C without issue. I'm not sure what I will make this move, I need to copy over all my data which should take a few hours and then get motivated to relocate the WD Reds into my backup FreeNAS unit and mount them as RDM drives. Yes, it will be a learning experience. We will see how stable this is.

Just one more thing about these hard drives, by default they park the heads and spin down after a minute (I didn't actually time it yet but I will). A setting of 192 or 254 in the APM will disable this from happening an leave them running, well that is my initial tests, more will be coming. I'm of the mind that the drives should run non-stop to promote longevity of the drives unless they are rarely accessed then spinning down makes more sense.

I haven't seen that problem but my system is pretty much constantly reading or writing something so they never have time to spin down.

Mine went up from a count of 2 to 87+ over night and the pool was just formed, no data on it, not even the system dataset. I suspect the hard parking timer is set for 1 minute and then FreeNAS somehow polls the drive for some data and it spins up and performs the request.

Very possible. Once things are setup it shouldn't be an issue though. I have a few jails doing things so the system never really sleeps unless it is powered down.
