So I have installed four 6TB 7200 RPM HGST Deskstar NAS drives into my system about 4 years ago. I wasn't sure about longevity if these drives with them being 7200 RPM but the main difference I noticed was they run a few degrees warmer than my old 4TB WD Reds. The warranty expired for these drives on October 29, 2020 and here we are and they are still performing very well even after being expired over 1 year. I'm probably jinxing myself even speaking about it, lets hope not.

The drives run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The system was powered down for routine maintenance (cleaning the dust out of the case and replacing one case fan) and when I moved to a new house the system was powered down for several months until I had a new house to move into and could set up the system again. Most of the Power Stop Count values of 128 were from initial build and testing, not powering off for cleaning/maintenance. I did burn the drives in and since I use VMWare to run my system, just a lot of initial testing before moving my data to these drives. I perform daily SMART Short tests (Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun @ 00) and weekly SMART Long/Extended tests (Tue @ 00). Below is a snippet of my daily emails I receive at 10AM and I included the first drive data as well, the other drives are very similar. So the drive temps are about 3C higher than normal becasue I turned off the HVAC in the house so the second floor (where the server resides) is slightly warmer than when I have the HVAC turned on and I expect the temps to drop a bit when winter hits my area. The drives are listed in order from top of the case to the bottom of the case and the reason for the 35C temp is just slightly better airflow across that drive.

In summary, I'm surprised how well these drives have held up and very pleased. When I need to replace these drives I will likely look for a 5200-5400 RPM replacement becasue I do not require the higher speed and I'd like it to run a little cooler, but I have nothing against 7200 RPM drives for a home NAS anymore.
