After an electric short in my house the NAS a HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8, didn't boot anymore. After installing a display and keyboard it worked again. Now in the GUI of FreeNAS-11.3-U5 I have three new error messages:
Code:
CRITICAL
Device: /dev/ada3, 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
Wed, 15 Sep 2021 05:13:01 AM (Europe/Berlin)

and
Code:
CRITICAL
Device: /dev/ada3, 16 Offline uncorrectable sectors.
Wed, 15 Sep 2021 05:13:01 AM (Europe/Berlin)

and
Code:
CRITICAL
Device: /dev/ada3, Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1.
Fri, 24 Sep 2021 08:51:11 AM (Europe/Berlin)

I searched the problem and found this guide:
Code:
http://bytesandbolts.com/fixing-freenas-error-currently-unreadable-pending-sectors/

So I ssh-ed into the NAS and ran
Code:
smartctl -t long /dev/ada3

then
Code:
smartctl -a /dev/ada3

Result:
Code:
root@freenas[/]# smartctl -a /dev/ada3

Since that did not return an "LBA_of_first_error" like in the guide i dont know how to proceed further.

If it helps I did the same procedure with the boot drive. An SSD inside an USB-case.

Hello,

You might want to RMA the drive if still under warranty, I guess "Offline uncorrectable" is valid reason for RMA (you might confirm with customer support, maybe you'll have to run some Seagate diagnostic tool before or so.).

There are some interesting values, I'm not sure how to interpret them (don't know Seagate drives that well):
#1 has the same value as #195
#7 and #188 are very high... but depending on how it is interpreted by Seagate...

You also should schedule regular SMART tests... there are some short tests until around 26000 hours and then nothing until 41000 hours, that's not good, well it makes it difficult to track potential issues (and having a short test every hour is maybe overkill...).

By the way, are you aware that your drive seems to be an SMR drive (at least in the list of SMR drives)?

Thank you. The drive is several years old so RMA is not an option. If replacing than on my own cost. Yes I know it is SMR. At the time it was the only affordable drive of that size. Isn't smart done regularly by FreeNAS? If not how did it detect an error and messaged me if not by smart?
The pool on that drive and its mirror is encrypted. Can I savely mount it and save the data? Or is it recommended to just replace the drive with a new one and resilver it in its encrypted state?

SMART tests need to be scheduled manually (not sure about version 11 but I think in TrueNAS there are per default some automated tests... Anyway, you have to make sure those are run regularly.).
SMART is also running as a process in the background (if activated in the services) so as soon as a drive reports an error (like an offline sector), FreeNAS will know about it. But since the SMART tests are not running, you won't have anticipated warning.
There is a difference between the SMART service and the SMART tests: it is not because the SMART service is active that the tests will be run...

In any case, make sure you have a good backup of your data and then proceed with replacing the drive. I would follow the user manual, it is described how to proceed with an encrypted pool.

Yes I know it is SMR. At the time it was the only affordable drive of that size.

Unfortunate. SMR drives will work sorta-okay right up until you're at the point where you are, where some substantial I/O needs to be done, which tends to be very hard on SMR drives, sometimes killing them.

Isn't smart done regularly by FreeNAS?

If you set it up.

If not how did it detect an error and messaged me if not by smart?

The old fashioned way, by checksumming your data and detecting errors. That's what ZFS is all about.

Do note that SMART monitoring is always on. If the disk comes across something, it will report it (manufacturer shenanigans aside).
That is different from running SMART tests, which explicitly test the disk and must be scheduled.
