So yesterday I received this error message near the start of a scrub.

Device: /dev/da5 [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data
Device: /dev/da5 [SAT], Read SMART Error Log Failed
The volume Ravenrock (ZFS) state is DEGRADED: One or more devices could not be opened. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.
Device: /dev/da5 [SAT], not capable of SMART self-check
Device: /dev/da5 [SAT], Read SMART Self-Test Log Failed

I then found a troubleshooting guide
https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...leshooting-guide-basic-common-failures.41026/

But I don't have any of the tell tale positive SMART failures so I don't know whats going on. Do I replace the drive anyway?

Ill upload the smart output here as well.

Post the output of smartctl -x /dev/da5.

I assume the drive is attached to the LSI SAS 3008 on your motherboard, correct? What firmware version are you using?

Also, as per the forum rules, the following information would certainly help:
  • System Configuration Information: Items marked with an asterisk “*” are required for a failure postings. However, all items are recommended and could simply be part of your tag-line.
  1. * FreeNAS version (ex. “FreeNAS 9.2.1.6-Release 64-bit”)
  2. * Hardware:
  3. * Motherboard (Model)
  4. * CPU (Model)
  5. * RAM Size (in GB and model)
  6. Hard Drives (Model), Quantity, and RAIDZ configuration
  7. Add-On cards
  8. For network connectivity, include details on your network hardware/configuration.

I'm currently on the LSI 3008 controller firmware version 10.

Did you read and apply the procedure from Drive Communications Failure section?
I would cut to the chase and just replace the data cable first. The connector on the drive's
PCB could be bad, but the common failure is the data cable.

No I haven't checked that yet as I haven't been home yet. I will look at it tonight and try a new cable. However just had a thought , since its the SAS cable wouldn't the other drives on that cable also be having errors then? Since they all connect to the MOBO with the same connector?

No. They're independent connections, albeit bundled together for convenience. A single differential pair could be at fault, impacting only one drive.

I'm currently on the LSI 3008 controller firmware version 10.
Don't even need to ask anything else to know that that is the wrong version.

Update FreeNAS to the latest 9.10 release and update the firmware to P13 (or whatever version is now current).

Ya I upgraded to version 10 maybe 3 months ago but there is not a version 13 available on the supermicro site to upgrade to yet so I know I'm not running the current version. OK then it may take me a while to troubleshoot the cable as I have no spares for the SAS and Ill have to order one from Newegg as no box stores I know of in my city sell them.

To be quite honest, I get the feeling they just repackage LSI's stuff and slap supermicro filenames on that stuff, along with an admittedly neat EFI shell script that automates things.

Using LSI's firmware is probably safe. The safest option, however, is to stick with a FreeNAS version that still uses the P9 driver and flash the controller to P9. I think it was @depasseg who flashed his 3008 with LSI stock firmware...

OK I have a spare cable ordered. But looking inside the server I still have some terminals on the SAS cable that are not in use. Could I connect the drive to a different terminal and FreeNAS will be able to recognize it correctly?

And of course its the hardest drive to reach..

So I reseated the cable connection and rebooted and this is the only error message I have now. "The volume Ravenrock (ZFS) state is ONLINE: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An attempt was made to correct the error. Applications are unaffected." Is it fixed now?

Yes, FreeNAS doesn't care on which port you connect the drive as long as it's connected ;)

Yes I used the LSI firmware for 9.3.1 (P9 iirc?). I haven't upgraded to 9.3.10 yet so I haven't tried the LSI p13 though.

OK so it went back to informing the pool is degraded. So I switched the terminal it was using on the SAS cable and booted her back up and its still gives me the error message as before "The volume Ravenrock (ZFS) state is ONLINE: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An attempt was made to correct the error. Applications are unaffected."

So should I send in for an RMA at this point on this drive? Was there any hints the drive is bad based on that SMART data above?

I only saw this (That everyone else mentioned):
  • 188 Command_Timeout -O--CK 001 001 000 - 339
Reference this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.
The count of aborted operations due to HDD timeout. Normally this attribute value should be equal to zero and if the value is far above zero, then most likely there will be some serious problems with power supply or an oxidized data cable.

Did you get the replacement cable in yet and hook it up? How is the PSU or power cable?

My advice is to post the SMART data again from the drive and see if there are any differences between the data you first posted. And also look at all the data for all your drives for comparison, I'm curious if you have other communications issues. It would be a lot to list so you could use pastebin.com or something similar to post all the data for each drive. Also when moving a drive via the cable you need to ensure you follow the drive using the serial number of the drive.

Right now it appears you are having communication issues (as my colleagues have already speculated) but that doesn't mean it's a data cable (typically is) or it could be the controller itself, or even more rare is the hard drive electronics. I would not RMA the hard drive just yet until you can try a new data cable first.

Here are a few things you can try in the meantime:
1) Post the SMART data of all your drives so we can see if there is something obvious.
2) Relocate the drive cables around (of course power down first). I'm making an assumption here... You can swap all the drives between thier respective motherboard connections to see if the problem moves, meaning all the LSI connected drives get connected to the SATA motherboard connections. FreeNAS will not care but it's a way to see if the problem stays with the LSI connections or the hard drive.
3) Run MemTest on your system for a while to see if there are any stability issues. As mentioned above Bad Power could cause issues too.

So I also still have 4 open SATA ports could I just move the problem drive to a sata cable and see if that fixes the problem? Then I would know its not the SAS cable right?

SAS Drives cannot be connected to SATA Ports. Doesn't work. ** However SATA Drives can be connected to SAS Ports..

Just to clarify, the drive you are talking about it is a true SAS drive and not a standard SATA drive?

Yes you can. The drive model and SMART info both indicate it's a SATA drive.
