Fresh install on a Supermicro X9SCL (Xeon E3-1270) that was previously used as a windows server.
Installing from DVD to SSD + 4 x 1TB WD (tried with and wo WD drives) 16G Ram

Installer fails to boot.

I'm unfamiliar with FreeBSD.

I simply can't go through the 175 posts w/ 8 pages each about copying USB sticks. I've wasted a day reading these things. I stay away from FreeBSD for just this reason, and I have avoided it for nearly a decade. This sounded like a good reason to try again, and nothing has changed.

I've tried all of the BIOS settings that I could find in these posts, the error never changes.
Code:
Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/md#.uzip [rw] ...
mountroot: waiting for device /dev/md#.uzip ...
mounting from ufs:/dev/md#.uzip failed with error 19
g_vfs_done():iso9669/FreeNAS[READ(offset=459710464, length=2048)] error = 5

Over and over, no mountroot prompt.

Linux and ISOLinux works just fine from that CD and SSD combo.

Am I giving up on FreeBSD for another decade?

Thanks!!!

I've had great luck with Win32DiskImager, Rufus never worked for any distro of Linux for me though. Just a quick note.

You already seem rather spring-loaded toward that conclusion, and it's your decision, but it shouldn't be necessary. I can say from experience that the X9SCL-F worked just fine with FreeNAS through the 9.3 series (I got new hardware about the time 9.10 came out, so I can't validate that from experience, but I'd be surprised if anything changed).

What version of FreeNAS are you trying to install? Did you verify the checksum of the downloaded file?

Apparently, ImgBurn is a good tool for FreeNAS specifically.

Good to know, and thanks for the update. I can't honestly remember the last time I saw someone use disc to install. If you have the -F variant of that motherboard, you could also mount the ISO remotely via IMPI, which is a very handy feature.
