Hello all,

This is what I have come up with for my home NAS:

i3 4130 3.4Ghz
P9D-M motherboard
Samsung Server Ram 16GB (2x8GB) PC3L-10600R DDR3-1333 REGISTERED ECC 2RX4 1.35V
3x3TB WD red (maybe 2TB)
Evga 500W Bronze
case undecided

Please let me know if there are any problems/incompatibilities.

Thank you

Only Xeon E5 and E7 support RDIMMs.

First problem: you have speced out registered memory for a motherboard that only supports unregistered memory.

How do you plan on configuring your drives? RAIDZ1 isn't recommended given the size of the drives, but with only 3 drives, you are left with few other options.

Ok, I will found this: Mushkin Enhanced Proline 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 UDIMM ECC DDR3 1333

What hard drive configuration would you recommend?
2 drives and 1 for parity?
thx

The common around here 6 drive RAIDZ2 is very popular as it's affordable enough to deploy 2 of them and have a good amount of space. HDD's will of course always be the biggest expense for a storage appliance. You can get HSGT 2TB HDD's of ebay for $35ea. I recently picked up 12 and all but one checked out great. Even the one that I'm returning passed all the checks. It just picked up 140 reallocated sectors during it's badblocks. The seller I went though not only packaged the drive with amazing care but they even are going to pay for the shipping back to return the drive. :) Now that is customer service. 2TB HGST EBAY

Oh ok, are these drives for 24/7 use like the Wd reds?

Aw dang, it does not ship to Canada
Also, what is wrong with RaidZ1?

RAIDZ1 just isn't safe with today large drives. I have a 3x8TB RAIDZ1 and I'm willing to put money up that when a drive goes in several years another one will follow while the one drive is being resilvered. My next planned expansion is going to be a 25 bay enclosure that I'm going to just JBOD and turn that into a 6 drive RAIDZ2.

I am on a tight budget ($750 CAD).
For Raidz2, 4 drives are needed,right?

I found this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Seagate-2TB-...589526?hash=item1a11f79b56:g:2V0AAOSwZtJW8x1r

So I just got of the phone with the ebay seller of those HDD's. He said they will ship to Canada through the global shipping partner program, but he also said that if you receive a defective item that it's on your to ship back due to the inflated shipping charges to ship from Canada to the states. Here is there website with a number to call them if you want to try and get something through them. Referb4Less

I would see how they pan out. Get at least 6 drives then as the price for those 6 drives with any shipping charges is probably less than getting new. Let us know if they work out for you.
