So I need a simple nas to mainly store and stream movie collection, backup files and run a teamspeak server.

I was thinking the Lenovo TS140 with an additional 8GB added on for 12gb total memory would work great for my needs. Is there anything I am missing for this build? Would this work good for me? Any advice is welcome, thanks! I will be running 2 WD Red 3TB drives and I'm planning on getting a third later on.

Hardware selection is acceptable, but read up on vdev/zpool layout. you might want to start with more disks - that model supports up to 5x3.5" internal.

4 drives in RAiDz2 would probably be a better choice if you value your data.

Take a look at TS440 too; it is a slightly bigger case, which takes disk trays. They are usually about the same price as TS140, and may be a better match for a NAS with room to grow.

I already ordered the ts140 and if I ever plan on expanding, I will end up building a skylake system most likely. The ts140 should be suited for my needs. So raidz2 requires a minimum of 4 drives? What kind of array can I run with 3 drives and would it really be worth it for the extra drive?

If you want to buy another 4GB module cheap, let me know. I have them pulled from new TS140 servers. They come with either 1Rx8 or 2Rx8 Samsung modules; I have both kinds.

BTW, these are dual channel systems, for best performance, you should install memory modules in identical pairs. Performance probably does not matter too much for a NAS, you will be limited by your network interface anyway.

well, 3 disks would be raidz, but that isn't feasible with todays HDD sizes. you could easily see an error during resilvering of a defective disk = data loss.
