Hi. Today I awoke to an email where my FreeNAS box was telling me the following:
Code:
Device: /dev/ada2, Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1

A short self-test was scheduled to run that night, so i assume that's what produced it.
By running "smartctl -a /dev/ada2" i found the following error:
Code:
SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1
Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Short offline Completed: read failure 60% 9829 1565565648

I am not familiar with the different smart errors, so I was hoping somwbody could tell me the severity of this error.
Does it mean that there where a single bad sector at about 40% into the drive?
Should I order a new disk immediately, keep an eye on it, or ignore it?

My set-up is 6 3TB drives in a RAIDZ2 configuration.
Complete contents of "smartctl -a /dev/ada2" pasted below:

I'd recommend running the long test first--although the short test encountered an error, none of the attributes are indicating anything out of the ordinary. Once the long test completes, post the SMART data again. But expect that you'll need to replace the drive.

Just started a long self test with:
Code:
smartctl -t long /dev/ada2

Or at least I think I did. I got this message:
Code:
smartctl 6.3 2014-07-26 r3976 [FreeBSD 9.3-RELEASE-p16 amd64] (local build)

Use smartctl -X to abort test

Usually the long self-test takes just under an hour for all the disks to complete.
So now I just wait for about an hour, and then run "smartctl -a /dev/ada2" again to see the results?
However, I'm not sure the test got started at all, because I can't see any increased activity on the graphs in the Reporting tab of the GUI.

SMART tests are run by the disk firmware, so FreeNAS doesn't report disk activity for them.

The long self-test should be finished by now.
Running "smartctl -a /dev/ada2" again gives:

To me it seems like the long self-test found the same error as the short self-test. So I guess it's all over for this drive then?
By the way, how do you guys usually go about the RMA in these cases? Do you provide the retailer with the SMART results?

Right, the drive is goner.

And this is the first drive I've seen where a short test actually found an error not previously found by a long test!

As for the RMA, if you can convince the retailer to replace the drive (that it failed the SMART tests should be enough), you'll probably get a new one. If you do it directly with WD, you might get a refurb.

One option is the online form on wdc.com. If I recall correctly, in addition to the serial number, you have to enter the error code from their disk testing tool (Data Lifeguard Diagnostics), which is a free download. But it may be easier to call them, after all, one reason you bought WD Reds was for the 24/7 support line.

Just started the RMA process. I went with the retailers online solution. I have used it once before on a laptop, and it was very professional. But it's probably going to take a couple of days, so it's really nice that RAIDZ2 can loose 2 drives.

Thank you all for your input, it is much appreciated.

It looks like you have had the drive for a while so I'm a bit surprised that the place you purchased the drive from will allow you to replace it, but I guess it depends on that company. If you can get a new drive that would be great.

As for leaving the FreeNAS system up and running, just pay attention to it. I'd run a scrub right now and if there is any data on the failing hard drive, it may relocate it on a good section of the hard drive. Of course, running a scrub will likely cause more damage to the failing hard drive as well and if there is data there, it may end up telling you that there is a drive issue.
