Opinions on these SMART Extended tests? Worth reusing?

I recently had a SATA cable go bad, but it kicked off a Pending sector relocation count on one of the drives. Being that they were about 3.5 years old I decided it was time to move to a new drive array.

After I migrated all data to the new array I decided to do extended SMART test on all the old 4TB drives.

What do you think of these old disks? Worth keeping around in a non-important array or ditch them? I'm happily sitting on a new 32TB WD RED array, so I've done a extended DOD 3 pass wipe on them, then ran SMART long tests on all of them. So now they are scrubbed clean and ready for re-use if I decide too.

However, two of the drives report RAW_READ_ERROR_RATE values of non-zero while the rest are at Zero. They have between 29,xxx and 31,xxx hours on all drives. So even without errors its getting near time to move off them.

The raw read error rate number is close to meaningless to the user, other than more is bad. It's weakly correlated with more serious indicators of issues, like multi-zone errors or bad sectors.

What do you think of these old disks? Worth keeping around in a non-important array or ditch them

PS. Seriously, you should run a SMART long on a regular basis. That is what allows you to catch drive faults before they can become significant enough to damage your data. I run a short test daily and a long test weekly on every drive in every array I manage at the place I work.

Yeah, I read a bit about how the UD1 isn't very useful or meaningful. But with 29,000+ hours on a Green drive, even with WDIDLE is not sure. The Load Cycle count is high on two of them because they sat in Raid1 without being WDIDLEd in my old MacPro.

Definitely send them to me, you don't want them anymore.

Ahh, there are a few people inline in front of you. :)

I thought I had it setup correctly in FreeNAS, but guess I didn't because the logs don't show enough long tests.

I did a double take on the temperature too. My 7200RPM Ironwolfs occasionally hit 40/41 Celcius and I am worried about them and thinking of ways to further cool them. 47 - 58 C would drive me nuts.

The case I had to stick them in kind of sucks. No fans. It was the only case I had to fit them in.

The case they normally sit in have fans specifically for the drives.
