is there a way to get freenas corral iso
That is funny, very funny. There is a comedian born every minute

Gosh I hope you were joking  But if you were serious here is a link, I feel you should have to work for this one and when you check out the link, you will understand the work required. I could not locate the ISO file itself. https://github.com/freenas/corral-build
You know that you take the ownership for any problems you experience, Corral was a terrible and rushed release. It disappeared almost overnight.

Having still a FreeNAS installed recently and still not configured, I was wondering if it was better to remove FreeNAS and to install already TrueAS Core or whether it is already foreseen that later FreeNAS become a fully TrueNAS Core.

What do you mean by "later FreeNAS become a fully TrueNAS Core"?

FreeNAS is TrueNAS Core. Version 11.3 is called FreeNAS, version 12.0 is renamed TrueNAS Core. They are the same product.

I know the code is the same, but I was wondering if some FreeNAS update was expected to become TrueNAS.
However, I only noticed now that this update is already available and that in fact I am now in TrueNAS.
Thank you.

this dude probably wasn't part of a FreeNAS community back then (meaning - he never experienced the FreeNAS corral fiasco). i still feel traumatized when somebody mentions FreeNAS Corral ;)

I guess if we're taking shots at you, in case you weren't aware, The Release That Must Not Be Named was pulled almost four years ago:

I still don't get why people are so salty about Corral. I was very involved in the testing and bug reporting process and I ran it in the same environment as my current TrueNAS with more or less the same services. Minus jails, of course. The system was rock solid, no problems whatsoever.
And I still think the GUI was groundbreaking. I understand the technical problems with the foundation JS library, but from a user's perspective it was one of the most pleasant to use UIs I ever had.

Well, the 25-page thread I linked above has some clues. I think the short answer is that it was never ready for release, but they shoved it out the door anyway. To give the most egregious (to me, at least) example, you couldn't even replace a disk through the GUI. That's an inexcusable omission in a NAS OS that's designed to be administered through the GUI, and it reflects very poorly on iX' product release process. I'm not certain they've yet shown that they've really learned their lesson from that lesson, but IIRC my thread some time ago asking that question got me banned for a while.

I must have missed that one.
My concern at the time wasn't even so much with that feature, egregious as its omission was--I'm sure it would have been relatively straightforward to code it into the GUI (IIRC, it was in the all-new-and-shiny CLI). It was more with the thought process, from top to bottom, that something as central as that was a secondary issue, a feature that didn't really need to be present (and thoroughly tested) before release.

Edit: And that, of course, is why many of us are pretty skeptical about new major releases--I don't really expect iX are going to pull TN12, but I also didn't expect they'd release it with a showstopper bug that caused uncommanded jail deletion. Maybe with -U1 or -U2...

First up, FreeNAS and TrueNAS are going to be getting much closer. As most of you know, TrueNAS is built upon FreeNAS, sharing the same open-source base across products. Up until this point we’ve maintained each release separately, with different source repos, build processes, QA frameworks, etc. With 12.0 we decided to make all of our engineers and contributors lives easier by unifying them into a single image. This will provide a huge efficiency and productivity boost by allowing us to streamline our development and QA efforts, and it will have the added benefit for the FreeNAS community of higher quality releases and documentation. Going forward, the same extensive QA testing we put into TrueNAS will be directly beneficial to FreeNAS as well. No FreeNAS functionality will be harmed in the making of this merge, so rest easy

Next, we’re going to be hard at work in 2020 to make our 12.0 code portable across multiple OS platforms. The middleware at the core of FreeNAS is already pretty portable today, and we want to start extending its reach. This also allows us to work on some new and exciting software products, complementary to FreeNAS, without disturbing or compromising the stability or reliability users depend on. We're excited to share what we're working on, but we're still early in the R&D phases, so we don't have much to reveal yet. Stay tuned for more info later next year!

Hi @Kris Moore , hopefully you can get some of my doubts cleared. I'm brand new to FreeNAS/TrueNAS and Linux in general, and I have been looking to some solution that can work for my needs. I look for a NAS that I can: 1) safely store my personal and work data. Photos, videos, documents; 2) be able to edit 4K videos straight out of the NAS; 3) share files or entire folders via unique links so I can send to clients; 4) use as a plex server; 5)and download torrent files using the NAS box for it via a plugin.

I know TrueNAS can do 1, 2, 4, but not entirely sure about the 3 and 5 as it seems now you can't install plug-ins that aren't like official pr something like this, like the Plex server, and the Nextcloud. Is there a way to install transmission or some other torrent client, and also, is there a plugin that I can generate unique links to share files with clients direct from my share folders in TrueNAS?

From my research, it seems FreeNAS had those plugins, I'm just not sure if TrueNAS also have them, and since it seems you will be joining both systems together, I wonder if the plugins that used to work on FreeNAS will work on TrueNAS. Cloud you clarify that fir me?

Thank you!

TrueNAS 12 core is a rename/rebrand of freenas. The name changed. It didn't drop functionality or compromise the build. Plugins and VMs and stuff run exactly as you'd expect.

FreeNAS Community,

With 11.3-BETA1 now in the wild, and FreeNAS on the march towards 11.3 general availability in the coming months, I wanted to take a moment and give you a heads up on what’s on the horizon for 2020.

As you may know, 12.0 is shaping up to be a significant release. The biggest changes coming to the product family will be a big update to ZFS, which brings us in sync with upstream “OpenZFS 2.0” (the official merging of FreeBSD support with the ZFS on Linux Project). Major features include native ZFS Encryption, Allocation Classes (Making a special vdev on flash for metadata), performance improvements, and more. We anticipate having 12.0 available for BETA sometime in mid 2020. While this is actively in development right now, we’ve also got some other exciting things going on behind the scenes.

First up, FreeNAS and TrueNAS are going to be getting much closer. As most of you know, TrueNAS is built upon FreeNAS, sharing the same open-source base across products. So with that, please pardon any of our dust on the 12.0 development side over the coming months. 11.3 is already shaping up to be the best FreeNAS and TrueNAS release ever, and we’re super stoked for what’s going to be landing for 12. These are exciting times for FreeNAS and we’re looking forward to the journey with you in 2020 and beyond.
its TrueNAS an updated version for FreeNAS? I am currently running FreeNAS 9, should i re-install with this TrueNAS? will I be able to use it as i was using FreeNAS? i want to make sure before i do the installation .

FreeNas works on all my infrastructure and Truenas Core does not. I hope there is no rush to discontinue FreeNas and merge into TrueNas? I understand the motivation and I certainly see it as making sense but his is the worst thing to happen to me since Centos EOD. In theory it should be great and core should be much better for me, however in practice it just doesn't work on all (any!) of my hardware (Mostly Dell Poweredge Servers with virtualized Freenas using PCIE passthough of LSI HBA And Western Digital Reds and/or Intel Optane and various intel sata and sas ssd). A few are supermicro systems and a even a few HP systems. I don't have any TrueNas Enterprise systems and this is purely because I'm at the edge and Micro DC's primarily and require flexible multipurpose infrastructure running everything from k3s to Open Stack under many constraints, and it is extremely impractical for me to have systems depending on other dedicated storage systems. This may change dramatically for me with the advent of SCALE.

Of course the Organization should do what's best for them and there's no reason to support my particular use cases or configurations. I'm just trying to figure out what on earth it is I need to do. Currently I have many many hypervisor systems on Centos8 with Virtualized FreeNas and FreeNas providing storage and VM backing via passed through LSI HBA. I am converting them all to debain and that is slow process but works fine however I can't get any of them working with TrueNas Core Stable; I'm sure you can imagine my frustration.

@inman.turbo In which particular way does TrueNAS CORE not work for you where FreeNAS 11.3 does?

Please consider that TrueNAS CORE is not a different product. It might as well be called FreeNAS 12.0. The name change is really just a rebranding and under the hood there were of course updates and changes and new features, but essentially it should work just like FreeNAS did.

Thank you for your reply.

I understand that in theory but in practice:

I can create a FreeNAS VM in libvirt and passthrough an LSI HBA, then create pool and use that for all other VM's on system, with no issue, forever and ever with months and month of uptime and never any errors, every few years the system sends me an email basically telling me to replace a drive.

If I create a VM and install TrueNas 12.0, I cannot create a storage pool on the same hardware with same configuration. I just get all kinds of errors. Sometimes I/O errors from the HBA card, and sometimes supposedly drives which work fine on 11.* are immediately Degraded in 12.*. I have never faced these kinds of challenges to this degree with any other beta or release.
