Been looking all over for the answer to what I want to know... Finally decided to just sign up for these forums...

4 TB WD Red $180

or
4 TB HGST Desktar NAS $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145912

I read over this:
http://blog.backblaze.com/2014/01/21/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/
and Hitachi drives tend to have a longer life than WD (with Seagate being a fail)
also I have had really good success in the past with Hitachi HDDs personally

My biggest concern is whether the heat or anything else that might be an issue with the HGST drive... its running 72oo rpm versus the WD which runs 5400 rpms. with 11 drives 5400 is plenty of speed.
Is there other concerns besides just heat I should have for the HGST?

I just have more faith in Hitachi, though I don't know if its worth the extra $220 it will cost. (I can get them for the same cost if I order by 3/5 but I probably won't by then)

I'm currently planning on buying 11 HDDs and using Cooler Master Cosmos II case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119252
also open to suggestions on housing 11 drives another way without a rack mount. Cosmos II is the best idea I've come up with.

Thanks for the feedback

You know, this question has been asked and answered so many times, I'm tempted to just delete this thread because it's going to turn into a shitstorm of arguing...

If it disappears, you'll know why.

i searched forums for HGST & Hitachi and didn't find much...

a link to something that addresses more than just the fact that the 7200 RPMs runs a little hotter would be appreciated if nothing else. I only found one post that mentioned the heat when looking and nothing else.

Maybe i'm really overlooking this answer elsewhere, but I'm also holding a 15 week old baby while typing this =] I'll return to searching the forums again...

I'll let you do that searching. I really don't need to search for it. It really is easy to do.

searched all sorts of things, MOSTLY found red vs green debates, including a 12 page one that was somewhat interesting... nothing really specific to Hitachi drives...

found some ideas for other cases for 11 drives, nothing as nice as the Cosmos II but with room to add more hdds...

didn't find an answer to 7200 vs 5400, which is my main question. mostly just a bunch of maybe this or that. i'll keep poking around though

I might actually appreciate the deletion of this cyberjock. from the looks of it there isn't really a good answer to be had. mostly just individuals personal preference. thanks

to quote you:
"You do your research, but your choice is more than likely based on faith rather than fact. You are buying into what you believe is correct and hope to God(literally for the religious choice) that you are making the right choice. You might be right or you might be very wrong."

The main thing that skews it from religion/preference is WD and the wdidle3 / load cycle count issue on the Reds. The Backblaze blog is a bad guide. Their sampling of Seagates is small and from a known problematic run of drives.
