I have a freenas .7 system running but would like to upgrade it.
If I build a new NAS and install FreeNAS4 as an embedded system, can my old drives be installed in the new system without a problem?
I have heard that trying to upgrade in place is a bad idea, so I would like to do this instead if it makes sense.

thanks

Not a clue.. this isn't the old FreeNAS project. If you want to continue with that code check out the NAS4Free forums.

Generally speaking, you are better of making a new pool and moving your data to a new pool than importing the old pool.

I get the code difference, what I was referring to was the disk format itself.
Did anything change there?
If this is still a crappy idea, I'll just keep running it as it's been trouble free since built it.

thanks

It's definitely not recommended. Some people have had no problems. Others had no problems and then one day the pool was gone. I wouldn't recommend you migrate unless you are ready to rebuild your pool.

Using the old FreeNAS .7 stuff is very unsafe as well. There's lot of unfixed bugs and obviously unpatched security risks with your version. I'd highly recommend you seek out an upgrade path soon.

I guess I'm missing something, why is there a question about importing Freenas .7 (now called NAS4Free) into NAS4Free, this is a FreeNAS 9 forum and you should be posting this question on the NAS4Free forum. Unless you really meant you wanted to upgrade to FreeNAS 9.

As Cyberjock stated, you are better off creating a new system and transfer your data over.

Pardon my dumb ass freudain slip. FreeNAS 9 not 4

Since the question was about migrating to Freenas9 with existing zfs formated drives from a freenas 0.7.1 system, I posted the question here. The question of importing my drives into nas4free system is a separate issue and has been addressed elsewhere.

As a mere user I seem to sense a measure acrimony twixt the two divisions of cost free nas's. I have not followed any of the split nor was I even aware of it until recently. Perhaps all the bugs in the v.7 avoided my installation, as the only reason I wanted to upgrade was the desire for a faster LAN connection, hence a new motherboard and therefore a new software installation.

I'm enough of a noob that I don't know what a pool is either... so the references to rebuilding aren't meaningful. The old system worked when I fired it up in 2010, and since I wasn't really interested in anything beyond the use of it, I haven't done a thing to it since I loaded it and fired it up. If there are stability problems or data loss, they have not occurred in my installation.

I can tell you that regardless of whether you choose to go with NAS4Free or FreeNAS9, you are looking at lots of reading and learning unless you are okay with losing all of your data. Even IT pros that have worked in the industry for 15 years lose data, so don't be fooled or try to do the bare minimum without expecting to losing data. Might not happen today, but one day you'll realize you totally screwed up your setup when your data is gone.
