Truenas won't recognize hard drives

Every single one I shucked was. (It's a safe bet for capacities 8TB or greater.) All four are being used in someone else's TrueNAS server which I helped build for him.

All white labels. They all have NASware, and all support TLER. (A couple were luckily He-filled, and run notably cooler and quieter.) All CMR.

Some caveats:
  • Be careful and patient as you shuck. [1] You don't want to cut your skin by mistake.
  • Different external enclosures differ in how you "shuck" them, but they mostly follow the same concept.
  • Shucking voids the warranty. (And likely the return policy.) But if you're extra careful, you can do it in such a way that it can be re-assembled if you need to return it.
  • If you don't care about warranty or returns, you can be more aggressive, but you should still take your time.
  • I used Kapton tape on all the shucked drives to cover power pins 1 through 3. (Not because they all needed it, but you might as well. Saves time to do it on all of all them, rather than use trial-and-error to see which ones need it.)
  • Be sure to check for and use -l scterc,70,70 for all the drives in their respective settings. [2]

Before you commit to shucking an external WD drive, you can actually run smartctl -a when it's plugged into a USB port. You can then read relevant information, such as its model number and attributes.

As for point number one, I highly recommend you check out @jgreco's guide [1], and humor yourself with the algorithms.

Oh dear lord, I clicked on that and nearly choked.

I highly recommend you check out @jgreco's guide,

I assume we're referring to the shucking guide? I didn't see a link above, so here it is.

We recently dismantled a bunch of old EasyStore boxes that held the old enclosures and screws. This is, if I count right, 55 drives. Of this batch of drives, no drives failed or had to be RMA'd.

How are the ironwolfs? This 14tb is $210 which is almost the same as those Easy stores but no need for shucking. https://www.newegg.com/seagate-ironwolf-st14000vn0008-14tb/p/N82E16822184759

It's there, but I embedded it into the text like this. [1] I'll make it more obvious now.

Can you please look at this thread and let us know if it solves your problems? I'm curious if you deal with branded disks, Linux cannot detect 520-byte disk sectors, but BIOS can.
I read thru it and tried to follow thru. It looks like it is a branded disk but I got errors when I was taking the steps to fix that. See error message screenshots attached. Any tips on how to proceed?

No worries, we can fix them. Can you reply into thread with all details? Also, can you ssh into server, so you don't need to post screen screenshots? Or use the UI console, but you should definitely have ssh service enabled into Scale:

Please post outputs into thread using [code][/code] bbcode. real screen screenshots are hard to follow, something like:
Code:
# sg_scan -i /dev/sg0
/dev/sg0: scsi0 channel=0 id=0 lun=0
    ATA HUH728080ALE601 0003 [rmb=0 cmdq=1 pqual=0 pdev=0x0]

To order a "WD Red Plus" from Amazon looks like a gamble now, since there are different third-party sellers.
There are some things that I have stopped buying from amazon here in Germany. HDDs are amongst them (except full retail package), since they regularly take a drive in just the antistatic bag and throw it in into the package with literally zero protection.

Can confirm. That's how I ended up with a bunch of Toshiba drives in complete shiny retail packaging. For some reason at that particular time prices had gone through the roof at all of our B2B distributors so I looked at Amazon. First delivery - WD or Seagate, don't remember - arrived exactly as yours, so insta-return. Then I found the Toshiba N300 ones. Still in service ... good product.

Currently I buy mainboard and barebones from Jacob and Mindfactory in most cases and disk drives and SSDs from Also (former Actebis).
