Dear Community,

I want to remove from my Windows Home Server to a new system. After some testing, I realized that TrueNAS-Scale can provide me the same functionality as I'm using today with my Windows Server Essentials Role on a Windows Server Standard 2022.

The functionality I need is:
  • Client BackUp : => will be UrBackUp in Docker
  • Musik Streaming: => will be AssetUPnP in Docker
  • TV-Server: => will be TVMosaic in Docker
  • File Synchronisation: => will be Synchthing in Docker (are there alterrnatives? Today I'm using ViceVersa ....)
  • File Server for
    • Live Data like
      • Musik
      • Dokuments (Word, PowerPoint, etc. ...)
      • CAD/KiCAD - Data
    • Archive/Movies
      • BluRay Movies
      • 4k UHD BlueRay Movies
      • Client Data Image & Data BackUp
For my "LiveData" today I have a Parity-Storage (like RAID-5) with 5 2TB SSD's which I want to move to a RaidZ with 5 new 2 TB SSD's.
My intention is to use the Western Digital - 2TB - Red SA500.

For my Archieve & Movies today I'm using a Parity-Storage with 5 8TB HDD's which I want to move to a RaidZ with 5 new 12TB HDD's.
My intention is to use the Western Digital - 12TB - Red Plus.

I found a nice small miniITX TowerCase from iStarUSA which gives me space for 16 2,5" SSD's and 5 3,5" HDD's.

As I need to use a miniITX Motherboard, I found this nice board from AsrockRack W680D4ID-2T.
  • Supports 12th & 13th Gen Intel® Core™ series processors
  • 4 DIMM slots (2DPC), supports DDR5 ECC/non-ECC UDIMM Memory
  • 1 PCIe5.0 x16
  • 1 OCuLink (PCIe4.0 x4), 1 OCuLink (PCIe4.0 x4 or 4 SATA 6Gb/s), 1 OCuLink (PCIe3.0 x4 or 4 SATA 6Gb/s)
  • Supports 2 M.2 (PCIe4.0 x4)
  • 8 SATA 6Gb/s
  • 2 RJ45 (10GbE) by Intel X710-AT2
I want to use:
I know, that I probably shoot sparrows with cannons, but I like to have fancy hardware.

My question is, is this HW selection ok for TrueNAS-Scale?

Do I need something for aditional L2ARC? Or is it not neccessary for my environment as a Media-Streaming System at home?

Best regards & Thanks for your feedback!

Ingo

That motherboard seems to have a lot of good things going on, but I note it seems to not yet be released.

The newest generation CPUs aren't really supported in full, so don't expect to be able to run the efficiency cores.

I would suggest with the amount of RAM you're talking about, L2ARC won't be needed.

Be prepared to work out a way to back up your app NVME and system config regularly to account for device failure.

According the responsible seller in Germany, Motherboard should be available late February. That's in line with the required cashflow ...

How can I backup the System config and the App-NVME? This I figured not out so far .... just an early beginner on TrueNAS:wink:

System config backup scripts are available on the forums (spearfoot's scripts are good, but also the multi-report from @joeschmuck, quick forum search should find those)

You could either use a replication task to backup the app pool to the "data" pool or to another box on your network with an rsync task if there's no other option.

Another question I have:

What about a shutdown-script? I want to shutdown the server every morning at 1:00 am.

What do I need to do?
