Hello.

This is my first NAS Build. The components are as follows:

FRACTAL DESIGN Node 804 Mini/micro ITX (black/Window)
ASUS PRIME Z690M-PLUS D4 Intel Z690 LGA 1700 micro ATX
Intel Core i5-12600K 12th Generation Desktop Processor
Crucial P5 Plus 500GB PCIe M.2 2280SS SSD
16GB DDR4-2666 UDIMM 1.2V CL19
Noctua NH-U12S redux, High Performance CPU Cooler with NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM 120mm fan (Grey)
EVGA 500 GD 500W Power Supply 80 Plus Gold

I am attempting to install TrueNAS Scale.

The installer has been booted onto an USB, and I am attempting to install it onto the Crucial P5 Plus 500GB PCIe M.2 2280SS SSD.

The blue screen asks me to Choose Destination Media. It says “chosen drives are not available for use in the TrueNAS UI” and I am unable to install it on the SSD.

Can anyone advise me on the best way to solve this please? I’ve had a look online but there are many conflicting articles.

Thank you in advance.

Can you verify that your CPU & Motherboard see the PCIe NVMe M.2 drive?

Even another OS like Ubuntu or MS-Windows would be suitable proof.

Some people have mistakenly bought SATA M.2 drives and installed them into PCIe NVMe only M.2 slots. Or visa versa.

Hello. Thank you for your prompt reply.

Yes I think the M2 is seen by the CPU and motherboard.

I attach a BIOS screenshot and the installer blue window regarding drives

There is no problem. Just hit the spacebar to select the NVMe drive and then the enter/return key.

This is just an instructional message that explains that whatever drive you select for installation will not be available as a storage drive in the UI.

Excellent. That worked. Has led me here

TrueNAS is more or less appliance software. This does lead to occasional problems with newer chips like network.

But, checking you system board, you have "1 x Intel® 1Gb Ethernet", which should be both well supported and work well. I wonder if it is because it is this chip, I219-V?

Perhaps someone who knows more about Intel Ethernet chips can chime in.

Hello. I have connected the ethernet cable which has taken me further along. This screen now comes up saying “couldnt bind with audio component”

Any thoughts?

Thank you all for your time so far

TrueNAS does not support audio. Just ignore that message. You can invoke the UI at the address visible on the screen with your web browser.

I've just been thinking about this - would I invoke the UI from another laptop as I don't have a web browser on this machine? Apologies if this is a really basic question to ask at this stage.

Thanks again

Of course. What do you intend to do with your TrueNAS? Did you do some basic research what this product actually does?

Thanks again for your reply. I've reviewed a video I saw on the weekend about the next part of the installation process so it's more clear now.

Again, my apologies for such a basic question.

The end goal is to use the machine and TrueNAS as a plex server.

A plex server is surely a good application for TrueNAS. You will interact with it exclusively from other machines. You probably - depending on your hardware and its BIOS - do not even need a monitor and a keyboard. There is nothing to do on the console if the system is operating correctly and does not experience e.g. a hardware failure.

Configuration is done with a web UI.

That's brilliant, thank you again for your comprehensive reply.

I will proceed with the installation via the web UI and if there are further issues I will come back to request further information. This is the most technical I have ever been with computers, i'm finding it fascinating and frustrating in equal measure.

Thank you again.

Hello again.

I have reached the stage where I can log in to the server on my laptop but it won't accept my password.

I have followed these guides and changed the password:

Any advice that can be suggested would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you again
