System

Q: Why the last update won't install?
A: It's probably because you've run out of space on the boot drive. Go to System --> Boot and delete some boot environments you don't need.

Q: Should I mirror my boot drive?
A: Yes. A second USB stick is roughly $10 so it's a very cheap insurance.

Q: What is doing writes every few seconds on my drives?
A: It's the system logging and stats, it's normal. Some plugins/jails can also write to the drives periodically.

Shares and Directory Services

Q. I tried to use LDAP with CIFS, but neither works now. Help!
A. First, make sure you have configured the Samba schema on your LDAP server. Next, open the FreeNAS web GUI and go to Directory Service -> LDAP. Then, click the “Advanced Settings” button and scroll down to the Samba schema box to ensure that it is ticked. For more information on configuring LDAP, read the FreeNAS User Guide.

Q. I want to use the FreeNAS GUI to connect to my LDAP server with TLS or SSL enabled, but I keep getting this error message, "SSL/TLS specified without certificate.” Help!
A. Import your server’s CA certificate to solve this problem. If you don't know how to import a CA certificate, click here.

Network

Q: Why I only hit about 11-12 MB/s on my gigabit network?
A: 12 MB/s is roughly 100 Mb/s so some part of you network isn't gigabit compatible or you use crappy cables (you need at least CAT5E cable for gigabit and CAT6 is recommended).

Misc

Q: Can I virtualize FreeNAS?
A: Yes, but if it's for production usage then it's not recommended at all. Be sure to read this thread and this one before.

Q: Are there online classes available for FreeNAS?
A: Yes, check out the website.

Q. I forgot my password, and can't access the GUI. Help! How do I reset my password?
A. To reset your password, use the FreeNAS system's keyboard and monitor to navigate to the Console Setup Menu, which appears when you boot into FreeNAS. Select option 7, and follow the prompts to set the root password. To learn more about Booting into FreeNAS, read the FreeNAS User Guide.

When there's some sort of consensus that this is useful, I will be happy to sticky it. I have some reservations since there's too-little content and maintaining it becomes problematic. In the meantime, I'm going to moderate this thread by shearing off all the responses into a separate thread, and then locking the main thread. You should still be able to edit "The FAQ", I believe, but if not, we can figure that out. I've become convinced over the years that stickies with 10 pages of replies aren't a good idea.

Thanks, this should be perfect ;)
