Okay, so my first problem may be a noob one, reading discretion is advised :) I'm using FreeNAS 11.2

First problem: on the SMB share, I can login with password but when I access the share's subfolder the Windows prompt goes like "you might not have permission to use this network resource"
So I started from scratch when I migrated back to FreeNAS from trying ubuntu and windows 10 enterprise (it just feels complicated with running full os's, had stability issues)
I create the pool, then create the group, then create the account, then create a dataset linked to the account, account linked to it with all the right permissions, set for Windows-type share, I create SMB share to the mount point in the dataset. Drive not accessible in Windows...

Second problem. Might not be related to FreeNAS.
Any plugin refuses to install: "Exception: URLError: occured, ... destroyed". Looking the issue up reveals that I have to use manual IP settings and might be a problem with DHCP. But when I try to input manual IP's it fails (maybe I don't "know" the settings, still don't have huge experience). I'm using an OpenWrt router if that helps.

Are there any logs I can provide or there's no need for them?

Thank you

I'm no expert, but if you installed Windows 10’s problematic October 2018 update, it broke some things with network drives. If you have Windows 10 and you installed that update, a fix was released yesterday. Here is the KB.

Also, the experts around here will ask you to provide your hardware specs (many people put them in their signatures so they don't have to remember to add them every time) before they try to help you troubleshoot, so you should provide those.

Thanks, I'm installing the update right now, indeed using Windows 1809, let's see if I get different results. But I'm pretty sure I'm missing some steps on creating the nice environment and settings for the SMB share. Is there a recent guide for setting SMB shares in FreeNAS, apart from the one from 2015?

Also if the plugins don't simply "just work" will I have to manually configure jails? What's going on with dhcp settings, or what can I try in my OpenWrt router? How can I put "static" IP settings for the jails, because simply putting a different IP with netmask 24 doesn't work.

I forgot the specs, sorry, I had them in an older post. This PC is totally not made to run FreeNAS apart from the RAM capacity, I know :P

-Intel Celeron J4105 SoC (AsRock J4105-ITX)
-8 GB Corsair non-ECC SODIMM RAM
-4 TB ST4000DM004 HDD

Okay, I fixed SMB. After updating Windows indeed the error changed to simply "cannot find network path". Then I unchecked "use as home share" in the share. Now it works!

Now the plugins. They just don't want to install. Trying to install Plex results in "EOF when reading a line" being sput out.

Im glad you were able to get your SMB shares working.

I also use Plex, but I don't use the Plugin version. I set the static IP in my router rather than in FreeNAS and I also have had to forward the port for Plex (default port is 32400) to be available outside my LAN.

I ran both of the Plex plugins on 11.2 with the default settings to verify the installs work and they did, so I'd suggest you try it again with the defaults and if it doesn't work I would reboot freenas and then try it again.

Glad you're glad. Oh yes I also used to directly forward Plex's default port, much more reliable than what it does when clicking accessible outside the network, I'm having DDNS addresses to the router.
Now I saw your specs and I also boot off of Ultra Fit sticks. Are they working all right for you, how long are they tugging on? :)

Unfortunately after reviewing the settings and rebooting, plugins still refuse to install. Fortunately most of them have the url exception error. So I have to set static settings to install them.

How did you set the static IP settings in your router? My router has the usual DHCP and the PC claimed it's IP of 192.168.1.220. If I set a different IP for the jail like 192.168.1.221, what plugins also seem to do, it doesn't work.

Edit: I created a jail and it automatically assigned the IP of 192.168.1.121, internet works to it. So I guess something's wrong with plugins.

I'm trying to install rutorrent in a jail using the guide, let's see if it works.

I couldn't get rutorrent jail to work but misteriously plugins now install! Maybe it needed all those update commands to manage to install plugins.

However Deluge says "password is incorrect", I have tried both the root password and the custom SMB user's password, none work. I logged in with password deluge but now I cannot download, just shows /downloads, pointing it to /mnt/my dataset/... doesn't work. How do I point it to the main dataset?

Plex doesn't show any folder from within my dataset, only it's folder.

qBittorrent WebUI cannot be accessed on any port on the plugin's IP.

Any help please? I need a simple thing: shared folder of SMB share, torrent client and Plex, within the 4 Tb drive's dataset.

I have been running my NAS for about 15 months and have not had any issues with my usb boot drives, although I did use new ultra fits and mirrored them as a precaution. I've considered switching to an SSD but I don't want to use up the SATA port, but I will switch eventually as it is now recommended.

How did you set the static IP settings in your router?

It will be different on different routers, my router is not OpenWrt so I can't help you with that but you can search online for those instructions.

Plex doesn't show any folder from within my dataset, only it's folder.

Plex doesn't automatically see your storage on FreeNAS, you just need to type the path to the dataset location you want it to use when you set up your plex libraries. Make sure you have added a plex user with the user ID set to 972. and that the plex user has permission to access the dataset you created for plex to use.

torrent client and Plex,

I dont torrent, so I cant help you with that. There are quite a few people around the forums who do who can probably help you with that. I would suggest opening a different topic that is specific to torrenting with plex. They are unlikely to see this topic as the tile is about SMB.;)

Thank you. I had an SSD when I booted Windows but I just sold it, bad thing because now I see that zfs can use it as cache. But then I would've needed another SSD to boot :P I remember somebody joking about needing SSD's for everyhting :)

Yes my ultra fit is new and I wrote relatively less to it, it only heats up a little bit under use. So if it worked for you it's all right.

Okay, and how exactly can I do that? In the new interface there are no options for plugins, just for jails. Will I have to go to the "painful" process of setting up jails?

I already tried typing "/mnt/[drive's dataset]/[smb user's data set]" in plex and it cannot find any media.

Yeah I know, I don't choose the most appropriate titles :D

Hmm I will try what was in this link. So I can do it via the shell. Is it was is highlighted, directory and chown?

There are 2 sets of directions below based on if you require the plexpass version or not. Personally I mount the video filesystem as readonly inside the plex jail as I don't need to be able to delete media from inside plex as it is managed through other applications.

Non Plexpass:
echo '{"pkgs":["plexmediaserver","ca_root_nss"]}' > /tmp/pkg.json
iocage create -n "plex" -p /tmp/pkg.json -r 11.1-RELEASE ip4_addr="vnet0|<IP>/<MASK>" defaultrouter="<GATEWAY>" vnet="on" allow_raw_sockets="1" boot="on"
rm /tmp/pkg.json
iocage fstab -a plex /mnt/tank1/apps/plex /config nullfs rw 0 0
iocage fstab -a plex /mnt/tank1/video /mnt/video nullfs ro 0 0
iocage exec plex chown -R plex:plex /config

iocage exec plex sysrc "plexmediaserver_enable=YES"
iocage exec plex sysrc plexmediaserver_support_path="/config"
iocage exec plex service plexmediaserver start

Oh thanks a lot, mount points got it working. I totally forgot that I can change settings for plugins also in the Jails tab. Already had the paths put in Accounts-Users.

This got Plex to work immediately.

Deluge however still refuses to access it. Guess it needs some more work :) I'll make a new thread about that.

Have a great great evening/day!
