Dear all,

I got an 'Security run output' email from FreeNAS this morning:
Code:
kernel log messages:
> (da1:mps0:0:1:0): READ(10). CDB: 28 00 eb 53 4a 48 00 00 40 00 length 32768 SMID 652 terminated ioc 804b scsi 0 state 0 xfer 0
> (da1:mps0:0:1:0): READ(10). CDB: 28 00 eb 53 49 48 00 00 c0 00
> (da1:mps0:0:1:0): CAM status: SCSI Status Error
> (da1:mps0:0:1:0): SCSI status: Check Condition
> (da1:mps0:0:1:0): SCSI sense: MEDIUM ERROR asc:11,0 (Unrecovered read error)
> (da1:mps0:0:1:0): Info: 0xeb534948
> (da1:mps0:0:1:0): Error 5, Unretryable error

I have NOT recently rebooted the server, there are no SMART errors that I can see, and I have not had any other emails of problems.

Disc temps are at 30-32 degrees in this humid UK week, the box is NOT in a location subject to foot-traffic or vibration.

All hardware, including cables and Dell I/O card was mew 15 months ago. Also, as per my signature specs, the box is UPS protected.

What does this error mean, please?

I'm assuming it's a hard-read error on Disc1 - but if yes - what's the consequence and what do I do about it?

Any thoughts appreciated..

Many thanks,
S.

It means you have a read error that the drive wasn't able to recover. If you were to invoke a SMART long test, it'd fail on the affected sector.

Because you have RAIDZ2, if you do a scrub, this sector will most likely appear as an error to ZFS and ZFS will correct it, which will force the drive to try rewriting the sector and if unsuccessful to hopefully allocate a spare. If that happens, you're all good. Make a note that the disk had an error if you'd like. A single error is nothing to worry about. Multiple errors are a sign of developing trouble.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa

Homeboy is dropping errors in da1 in a dual-usb-boot-device system.

It's his THUMB DRIVE that's jacking up. no?

Could be. That's why a "camcontrol devlist" would be useful, but people so infrequently actually provide a full report.
