Woke up thismorning to one of my drives being faulted. If you gents could help me sort through whether or not that's a fluke or the drive is failing I'd appreciate it. Here is the relevant dmesg output:

Here's the output of SMART for that drive. No other drives show similar errors.

That's a laptop hard drive... those aren't usually built to tolerate 24x7 operation, so you may be disappointed with the useful life length you get there... that said, it's not reporting errors when the last short tests were run, but the long test is detecting an error at around 10% in so despite what looks like a clean bill of health at the top, you're in a little more trouble than that. In addition, I see the drive is SMR... this will not generally end well for you.

What probably happened was a kernel panic as a result of the SATA controller not liking something it came across while the long test was running (possibly not even related to the long test itself, but perhaps an IO contention for accessing the disk while it was busy running the long test. The Kernel panic probably caused a reboot, which power cycled the disks, stopping the test.

Apparently there's still (at the time you took the report) a long test running with 80% remaining.

That was actually a short test running which passed and I just completed another long test that also passed.

The Kernel panic probably caused a reboot, which power cycled the disks, stopping the test.
Unlikely. No signs of a reboot and the other drives are scheduled to test at the same time and none of them ran into issues. If there was a power issue it was somehow specific to this drive.

In addition, I see the drive is SMR...
Bah is it really? That's almost certainly the problem then - I've stumbled into this issue before with another drive. I thought I'd checked this one against the list of "do not buy" but I guess I must have had a typo or something. In any case I'll get a different 2TB drive on order to replace it.

Bah is it really?

Model Family: Western Digital Blue Mobile (SMR)

It's there in the brackets in the SMART output...

I admit I missed that line until you pointed it out and now I feel pretty silly. Case closed though - thanks.

Now to decide if I keep the damn thing as an external hard drive or if I just sell it and be rid of the monstrosity.

You can probably use it for an external reference disk attached to a PC with little risk.
