SCALE permission denied for home share

I'm setting up a new NAS and ran into some issues with creating a home share.
I started from a fresh TrueNAS SCALE installation and did the following:
  1. I created pool from 4 HDDs in RAIDZ1
  2. On that pool I created a dataset called Homes (SMB type)
  3. I created a SMB share on the Homes dataset, and enabled "Use as home share"
  4. I created a new user, and indeed by default it gets a home directory on /pool/dataset/username
  5. I go on a Windows computer, log in with the credentials of the user, and I see the home directory there, named after the user
  6. I try to open the folder and: permission denied. I am logged in with the username and password I entered in TrueNAS, but that does not work.
I've looked online but I can not find a solution to this. I took the steps above based on this guide: https://www.truenas.com/docs/core/coretutorials/sharing/smb/homeshare/ and looked online, but everyone just seems to give up on getting this to work: https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/how-to-setup-working-home-directories.89157/ or they do not use it at all and make separate datasets for every user (all guides/tutorials I've found). Documentation on this seems pretty rare, as I can not find more than a small handful of posts from people who have used this feature, and some of those posts are very old. Could someone tell me what I am missing here, or is the best way forward to indeed not use this feature and just make separate datasets for all users (however cumbersome that may be)?
